Romney: We have too many teachers, cops, and firemen. Fire them!

You mean Obama wanting to use federal money to hire firemen, cops, and teachers?

"Mitt Romney rebutted President Obama’s call for aid to state and local government to prevent layoffs of public employees by bluntly insisting that government payrolls needed to shrink, even if it meant fewer firefighters or teachers."

The positions are indistinguishable, I'll grant that, but if you actually cared about the results, would you do that?

No, I would not.

I am willing to concede that they hate America (for some definitions of America).

I've been railing against pork spending on blah-blah for years. Never was a federal project more bland.

You liberals make me sick!
If we didn't have federally-funded blah-blah then the whatsit industry would collapse - then where would we be?

Romney's been pretty clear on that; he wants us to have the biggest, baddest military in the world with the highest-tech weapons and all that goes along with that.

As a 40-year police officer, I'm pretty sure I'm an "American people" too... as are all my colleagues and fellow first-responders and similar people who are all employed by both private firms and by state and local governments. And federal government too... You know most Republicans seem to want plenty more border patrol agents and INS enforcers and Coast Guard sailors... All to keep our borders secure. (well, sorta secure)
Somehow I don't see the Republicans wanting to fire or lay off all those folks; though I imagine they could be privatized if there was some way to make any money doing it....

Kinda like the overall population, right?

I am not making a general statement about whether there are too many teachers but the number of teachers has grown much faster than the number of students.

For public schools, the number of pupils per teacher—that is, the pupil/teacher ratio—declined from 22.3 in 1970 to 17.9 in 1985. After 1985, the public school pupil/teacher ratio continued to decline, reaching 17.2 in 1989. After a period of relative stability during the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, the ratio declined from 17.3 in 1995 to 16.0 in 2000. Decreases have continued since then, and the public school pupil/teacher ratio was 15.3 in 2008. By comparison, the pupil/teacher ratio for private schools was estimated at 13.1 in 2008. The average class size in 2007–08 was 20.0 pupils for public elementary schools and 23.4 pupils for public secondary schools.

Wow, what an idiot.

I can see the commercial now... the wreckage of the Twin Towers from 9/11 in the background, the scene swarming with first responders (cops and firefighters) as they drag people to safety, and then Romney's dumbass quote superimposed right over the top of it.

Looks like Mitt is right back to implanting his foot firmly into his mouth, once again

In other words, unless they're needed as convenient background props whenever a Republican wants to remind everyone about 9/11, policemen and firemen can go screw themselves.

Since when is it the federal government that hires firemen, cops, and teachers? These are hired at the state and municipal level, the federal government has no business or responsibility to fund local governments.

Since I was born.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_grant

Since the 1970s, the United States government has provided large sums of money through block grants, under a policy that has come to be known as "devolutionary" or "new federalism." Block grants replaced the previous policy of revenue sharing (1972–87).

Oh, crap, I forgot about the Interstate Highway!

Roads, which had been historically state an local issues, were suddenly funded by the Big Government!

When it comes to cops, firefighters and teachers I say privatize, privatize, kill.

Nice. Even the stupidest Libertarians I know do not think privatizing police and fire is a good idea. And kill the teachers? Really? That is the sort of statement I expect to hear from an unreformed Bolshevik, not an American "Skeptic."

My prediction: Mitt's going to come out in favor of privatizing police, fire, and education.

That's about the only way to salvage this.
I can see how that would work: "This is 911 emergency, can you tell me the nature of your payment method?"

"Mitt Romney rebutted President Obama’s call for aid to state and local government to prevent layoffs of public employees by bluntly insisting that government payrolls needed to shrink, even if it meant fewer firefighters or teachers."
Exactly. The very worst thing the federal government should be doing is bailing out irresponsible state governments. What's to constrain them if Uncle Sam has thier back? Maybe the local governments could save the jobs of the teachers, firemen, and cops if they cut some of thier bloated bureaucracy, cronies, and hangers-on. Could probably save them just by firing redundant and overpaid school administrators.

But hey, why be responsible when Uncle Sam rewards you for being irresponsible?

Romney was responding to this ad btw:

Make no mistake about it, that ad is presenting a jobs plan to hire teachers, firefighters, and local police. This is not in any way, shape, or form the role of the federal government and is horrible public policy for reasons I outlined above.

I think a more accurate description is that at this point in time, the Republican platform is to be against anything President Obama is in favor of.

If I were working in the White House press staff, I would send out a short press release saying the president wants to increase blah-blah. Then I'd wait until the Republican National Committee issued a statement that we need to reduce the number of blah-blahs, at which point, I would quickly issue a correction saying that the White House press release was wrong and the president really did want to reduce the number and now that both sides agree, we can take steps to make it happen.

:D

I saw a funny Facebook status recently:

I'd like to see the president issue a statement about not eating yellow snow just so I could watch the (R)wingers and Fox "News" lament about how good it is to eat yellow snow.

;)

You're really going to defend block grants, the holy grail of pork?

Do you know what "interstate" means? And the national interest in a modern highway system?

Now, what is the national interest in Uncle Sam paying for Peoria's cops, firefighters, and teachers?
