“He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

So the official GOP position is that we have too many cops on the beat? Too many firemen fighting wild fires from global warming recurring flooding? Too many teachers to teach our kids?

Is that really the GOP normal now?

It wasn't that long ago that GHW Bush was arguing with Bill Clinton over who would add the most policemen to the beat.

Unabogie, they hate everything to do with this country, and wrap their hatred in the flag. I think we really are seeing the end of America happening.

My BIL is a cop in a major city. For a while he was getting into RW politics and listening to Limbaugh. I think he's starting to come around, though. This hits home.

Oh, and his mother is a retired school teacher, living on her pension. You know, a leech.

Assuming it's a real quote, that would make a great TV ad. It will also be interesting to see how Romney responds when questioned about it. Assuming of course that the "damn liberal" media has the balls to ask questions.

Why wouldn't it be a real quote?

My prediction: Mitt's going to come out in favor of privatizing police, fire, and education.

That's about the only way to salvage this.

They hate America?

I think a more accurate description is that at this point in time, the Republican platform is to be against anything President Obama is in favor of.

If I were working in the White House press staff, I would send out a short press release saying the president wants to increase blah-blah. Then I'd wait until the Republican National Committee issued a statement that we need to reduce the number of blah-blahs, at which point, I would quickly issue a correction saying that the White House press release was wrong and the president really did want to reduce the number and now that both sides agree, we can take steps to make it happen.

I've been railing against pork spending on blah-blah for years. Never was a federal project more bland.

For starters, we don't need more x is not the same thing as saying we have too many x.

Why exactly do we need more cops? Is there a sudden rise in crime? Why, no, in fact there has been a substantial decrease in violent crime over the last 20 years, off about a third since its peak.

Why do we need more firefighters? Is there a sudden rise in home fires? Nope, in fact there has been a substantial drop in home fires and deaths from home fires; about half as many as there were 30 years ago.

Do we really need more teachers? The number of public school teachers has grown quite substantially over the last 20 years and is projected to continue growing.

He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.

Saying we need to cutback on x is a pretty clear expression that we have too many of x.

For me in Europe it looks like the Republicans would dispute that the Sky looks blue on a nearly cloudless day if Obama said it.
But then again our politicians suffer from the same problem...

Only if you ignore the context of the paragraph.

Since when is it the federal government that hires firemen, cops, and teachers? These are hired at the state and municipal level, the federal government has no business or responsibility to fund local governments.

Or simply wants to prevent the expectation from local governments that they can rely on Uncle Sam to pay for their cops, firefighters, and teachers.

Not one penny of federal money should go to those hires.
