Pizzagate

Websleuths is a great demonstration of investigator tunnel vision in action. The forum does have a few sharp and logical thinkers but most of the participants seem to pick a suspect and then look only for evidence that supports that person being guilty.

It is odd how some people view investigation.

In high school in one of our classes we were setting up a mock trial. I was the defendant, accused of going through a stop light and hitting another car.
A friend of mine was to be the Judge. Outside of class, before the mock trial began, he told me that he was going to find me guilty no matter what the jury said. I told him that isn't how the system works and that he was not 'getting it". He didn't believe me until the teacher told him, "that's not how the system works".

I ate a pizza yesterday, does that make me a pedophile? :(
It had pepperoni on it.

No, I'm pretty sure that's not what makes you a pedophile.

The NY Times has an interview with the guy who tried to shoot up the restaurant.
"The intel wasn't 100%", he said.
You don't say.....
He also apparently still believes that the Comet Ping Pong restaurant is a centre of paedophilia, despite not finding any children there.

"The intel"? Dear lord- role-playing with a real rifle. The article doesn't say what the guy does for a living, but I'd bet the only actual "intel" his job involves is something like knowing how many pairs of 3-way switches the plans call for. Not to deride that- it's what I used to do- but it's not a job that comes with crime-solving superpowers.

Read in an article that he'd worked in movies for his dad's indy-movie company, and a brief stint as a firefighter.

He also said something to the effect of religion having cured him from his internet addiction.

Sounds like a pretty basic internet RWN.

Thinking about this, I'm wondering about the assumptions about Satanism that underpin some of this nonsense.
For example, the antlers. Is there any established association between antlers and Satanism? The devil is usually depicted with goat horns, not antlers. Antlers are more of a pagan thing, AFAIK, and not associated with Satan.
More importantly, paedophilia itself. Is that a Satanic thing? Are all Satanists paedophiles? Is it part of the religion, or is that just made up?

If you're Christian enough, all paganism is the work of the Devil.
And Satan's evil, molesting children is evil, being a Democrat is evil, so it's all perfectly natural to suspect that a Democrat would also be a devil worshipping pedophile.
They're not looking for actual evidence, just for a way to demonize everybody who does not belong to their group.
