I have an idea.

The half of England and Wales that wanted to stay should all move to Scotland
I have a better idea. Scotland should become independent of the UK and resolve to remain within, or rejoin, the EU. Then England could consider at leisure the effects of withdrawal as and when they manifest themselves; and if in consequence its people change their minds about membership, they can reverse their decision in accordance with whatever their constitution may provide for in such a case, and seek readmission.

Whether they will be welcomed by the continental EU states as warmly as Scotland is of course another matter.

Or Cameron could just grow a pair and say nope

His careers over anyway

Why is his career over? I have an idea. He just stays where he is until 2020, and if the election then goes against his party, he just grows a pair and tells the majority of the electorate to **** off. :D

Because he caused this population dividing mess

Because he caused this population dividing mess
Then he simply has to put a stop to such naughty stuff. Population dividing messes disturb the tranquillity of the social order.

Do you know the annual cost to British business of dealing with population dividing messes? No, I don't either, but it's probably quite a bit really. :)

Are we including whether jaffa cakes are biscuits, Andy Murray is A Scot or a Brit and whether Cliff is gay?

Millions

These issues have to be resolved by popular referendums, I fear, as they are clearly constitutional.

Rational thinking, common sense, etc should indicate that Theresa May will become PM with a high percentage of the votes, but even so, it will be worrying to see just how many people do actually vote for that other woman.

When Theresa may is the rational choice then we are beyond the point where rational thinking is of any use I fear.

I think I've asked 3 times now
That's because you're pretending to be dumb about it I suspect. You are on record on this forum as saying Farage "made you vote conservative in 2015" thus testifying to influence he had on your political activity. Now apparently you cannot conceive he could have any influence on anything to do with Brexit. Use an iota of imagination. I don't actually choose to spend any more time considering Farage at this point so suggest we leave it and you can assume you have all the last words.

Evasion noted.

The best way to get out of this mess is to, sorry, imitate the Cousins and start naming celebrities as political leaders. The star-struck genpop then goes along more docilely. I am totally in favor of Judi Dench or Daniel Craig as the next PM. Then have a minister by the name of Q start issuing statements about the wobbly nature of Brexit, and that gadgetry may suffer as a consequence. That should get the kingdom cracking again.

...This summer-long doldrum of post-Brexit sux.

Ive got another brilliant idea.

The UK could become another US state.

Upsides.

Your food gets 10 x bigger
Everyone can carry guns

Downside
Just the odd mass shooting

Trade galore. You get to hang a new flag outside your houses.

No.

The only thing left for him to do was to sit on the sidelines claiming all the credit. No, he had no conceivable role, given that head rabble-rouser was no longer required.
Why was he not the obvious choice for Letwin's role? Surely someone at the centre of the leave movement for the last 10 years, would during that time have been thinking about what an independent UK would look like and what would need to be done to get there.

No no no. Thinking about things comes later. Remember? No planning allowed.

Links. We need links.:D

It's very interesting how the narrative has evolved over the past 36 hours. The "Mothergate" story in The Times and her reaction to it has, at best, revealed that she lack polish and media training. Insisting that a major newspaper (even one who has come out for her leadership opponent) withdraws a story for quoting her verbatim is not a great idea.

Insisting that they release the transcript is a move that can backfire when they do, and the corresponding portion of the audio recording, and it demonstrates that the quotes in the story (if not possibly the headline) are entirely accurate. On the TV this morning Andrea Leadsom is now being positioned as the candidate to claim the "real" conservative party back from the social liberals who have hijacked it during the Cameron years.

It seems that she's starting to retreat from some of the socially liberal positions she had adopted of late. Whether this is just a ploy to reclaim the Conservative Party base or really reflects her true views is a matter for debate. She does seem rather uncurious (not knowing about climate change until she became Environment minister is an example), thin-skinned and naive.

The way out of this mess is for the UK to state that they will be pressing the button in 2222. I don't see how anyone could object to that.
We have been told countless times that the Leave campaign have no responsibility whatsoever for any post Brexit planning and the Government has full responsibility in that regard. Picking that date would be in accordance with the wishes of the population according to the question as worded on the vote paper. It would also restore economic certainty, guaranteeing access to the free market.I fail to see how anyone could rationally complain

The wild card that is the Tory party membership is every bit as wild, unrepresentative of MPs and voters, as the Labour party one I am afraid. And they are choosing a PM not an unelectable party leader. . . .

This should be in the Conservative leader thread, but no biggie.....

It's a pity that May isn't slightly more reformist and overtly socially liberal, because a convincing victory in this leadership election would then hopefully stomp out (for the time being at least) the reactionary element in the Conservatives which has always been the reason I've voted Liberal / Lib Dem.

Other than character traits such as "difficult", "steely & determined" and so on, we seem to be getting little about May's position on many issues. I'm hopeful that some sort of personal manifesto will emerge during the next few weeks so that I can determine whether I need to make a wax effigy and find some pins, or whether I can relax contentedly in the knowledge that the country is in good hands.
