Mass shooting at California garlic festival

Witnesses and news reports speculating about large capacity magazines, bump stocks / auto fire and multiple shooters.

Yeah.

Gonna wait for the official reports.

Odd target. A garlic festival? Convenient location with lots of "targets"? Seems rather indiscriminate.

I have seen some shaky footage. It as eerily reminiscent of previous random shootings. Lots of scared people seeking whatever cover they could find.

I live 15 miles from there and I've never gone to the event. Too many gang problems and stabbings in years past. Tried to look up stats but all the results I get are about today so whatever, I'm lazy. Maybe it's not so bad, but that's always been my impression, put it that way. Lot of gang activity in Gilroy, has been for decades.

We just had a shooting in my town a few weeks ago at a Ford dealership - disgruntled employee. Just up the Freeway from Gilroy and a 3 miles from me.

I get more details from the Daily Mail than from all of our local papers, including the San Jose Mercury, combined.

The Garlic Festival is an official Gun Free Zone by the way, so this shouldn't have happened at all!

Well - waiting for the next shooting I guess.

At the police press conference just now, the police chief has said they positively are looking for a second person, although the exact nature of their involvement isn't completely known. The chief said that based on witness reports, they believe the person may have served some kind of "support" role.

Law Enforcement:

4 dead, including the gunman.

Possible 2nd shooter or accomplice unaccounted for.

16 injured.

Gunman cut through perimeter fence from outside the venue to gain access to the stage area.

Unknown type of rifle.

Sure, but I am not getting any idealogical reason for that target. Could be a flat out wingnut.

Unconfirmed of course, but the shooting took place near the stage where a band was performing. As the band took cover, one of the members shouted "Why are you doing this?" To which the gunman said "because I'm angry."

So yeah, Wingnutish.

For what it's worth

An Instagram account bearing the suspect's name, created four days ago, posted two messages shortly before the attacks, including a reference to a white supremacist text.

One post was a photo of people walking around the Garlic Festival with the words "Ayyy garlic festival time Come get wasted on overpriced sh**." The other post, made about an hour later, showed a sign of Smokey Bear saying "Fire Danger High Today."

"Read Might is Right by Ragnar Redbeard," the caption said. "Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white tw**s?"

A "mestizo" is a person of mixed descent, usually white and Hispanic, or white and American Indian. "Might is Right" is a book published in the late 1800s which has been described as a white supremacist text that promotes anarchy, vilifies Christianity and calls Jesus the "true Prince of Evil." The natural order, according to the book, is a world at war in which the strong must vanquish the weak, and white men must rule over those of color.

I love how nobody has an opinion until they know the shooter's demographics.

Grind your axe a little harder over there, Joe, most people aren't 'having an opinion' until MORE FACTS ARE IN.

Except for the opinion that the shooting was tragic and reprehensible; I haven't seen anybody holding back on that opinion, even before any facts were in.

Wow, people sure went out on a limb on that one. What if it turns out the shooter was actually a rogue but good-hearted ex-special-forces ex-cop battling it out with the gang of six-year-old international drug dealers who had kidnapped his daughter? Won't they look foolish.

Local press confrence just ended.

Gilroy Chief announced the shooters name - reluctantly - as he didn't want to grant notoriety to the actor.

Three officers were involved in an exchange of gunfire within one minute of the initiation of the incident. The officers were not injured.

"AK-47" type rifle, identified as an SKS. They are not in any way identical past the cartridge used.
