Intelligent Design

Here's an example of "Intelligent Design" I was told some years ago.

Both my dog and I have the gene that makes vitamin C.

However - hers is switched on, whereas mine is switched off.

Over the millennia a huge number of people have suffered because of this design.....

Ho ho. The real issue revolves around a skill called car control. Every male of the species thinks they are hot **** with a car until they attend a school such as this: https://bondurant.com/high-performance-driving/
They soon find out that there’s more to skillful driving than just pressing the “loud pedal” harder.

Anyone who hasn’t had training like this is likely to make the wrong move when they have only a fraction of a second to respond to a sudden hazard. Then the difference between a simulation and reality will become all too suddenly apparent.

That just proves that God favors the oranges.
He switched the gene off in us so we would grow more citrus fruits.

That's exactly what you have been saying. You never actually passed any test, nor had any luck at all, nor achieved anything. According to you those are all illusions, right?

You are so right. I use to race cars and our natural instincts tend to make people do the wrong thing like using too much brake, steering the wrong way and not actually accelerating when we should. I've spun out many a time on the track. And you haven't lived if you haven't done a 360 at 100 mph and regained control of the car.

One moment it's 'oh oh' and then after cleaning out you shorts...you think 'I'm cool'.

With modern ABS, I don’t think you can use “too much brake”.

My fear is not using enough brake. Not wanting to commit to just mashing it as hard as possible, because it feels unnatural.

As an aside, I was an accident investigation unit for about a year. One thing that was not uncommon was to see skid marks stop well short of the point of impact. It’s as if at the very end, the driver gives up. Especially sad because in some cases continued braking might have avoided the accident completely, or at least cut down in the severity of the impact.

You can. Like in the rain or ice. Just last year, I was driving way too fast on a wet winding road and the car started to spin and I went to the bake when I should have just tapped it and let off the accelerator and downshift. I realized my mistake pretty quickly though and regained control. I was rusty. But ABS is fantastic, I give you that.

Just steering this back on track, is there a case to be made here that we do not have intelligently designed natural instincts, if we make these mistakes.:)

We do not have intelligently designed anything. Other than things of our own manufacture, and I'm not too sure about lots of that.

One of my favorites is the lens of the eye, “designed” to need a complicated system of ducts and a shutter to keep it moist.

Makes sense if we evolved from a sea-dwelling ancestor. Makes no sense as a “design” for a land animal.

Back to PartSkeptic’s Argument From Design...

It reminds me of the ludicrous example of noses being perfectly designed to support spectacles!
