Gun controll?

Oh, crap... So, I watched this video about gun control about how they took all the guns away in england and it stirred the pot of paranoia again... Especially considering that England also has a reputation for being constantly monitored... It makes me wonder if it isn't part of some conspiracy. Guys, I'm kind of a mess right now and some re-assuring words would be nice... Discuss?

Is this video online? Linky?

I really don't see any conspiracy angle to this. Plain and simple political and social issue.

Well, you know the first thing the communists do when they take over a country is confiscate all the privately owned guns. I keep a rod buried behind the garage… just in case.

Huh. That's funny. I don't seem to recall 'them', or indeed anyone, taking all the guns away in England. Must've happened right after hell froze over last week.

The Supreme Court, while having not ruled on the DC gun ban yet, seem to have made it pretty clear the 2nd Amendment isn't in trouble over here any time soon.

So any law-abiding citizen in England can have a gun in their home? Looks like all the gun threads we've had here where Brits wring their hands over America's gun culture and how they don't have guns there must have been something I dreamed up.

But this thread should be in Politics, and if it's one thing this forum needs it's another gun control thread. I don't think we've had one in nearly half an hour now.

The scenes of the mass marches in the video were of protests against the fox hunt ban. Nothing to do with guns.

There are extensive threads in the Social section about gun control on both sides of the Atlantic. And the suggestion that "England" (I think you mean the UK) has had its guns "taken away" would be a grossly inaccurate rendering of the actual position.

Yes, I think I remember seeing something about those. Wow, that video really misrepresented the footage. Talk about having an agenda.

There were no marches or mass protests in objection to the post Hungeford ban on automatic weapons and the post Dunblane ban on handguns. And yes, if you have a reason to own a gun - primarily farming, gamekeeping, hunting, or sport - then it's perfectly possible to get a licence. Many people do.

What we don't allow, of course, are military grade weapons for which there is no legitimate civilian use. And in this respect we are not particularly different from the rest of Western Europe.

So how would this ever be a conspiracy?

So handgns were banned. And you have to prove you have a "reason" to own other guns - and I note personal and home protecton isn't one of them you listed. Is it legal to keep a loaded gun in your home?

And are you sure it's only automatic weapons that are banned outright, and not also semi-automatic?

At the risk of over simplification, yes.

I note personal and home protecton isn't one of them you listed.

Correct.

Is it legal to keep a loaded gun in your home?

Nope. Ammunition has to be stored separately I believe.

And are you sure it's only automatic weapons that are banned outright, and not also semi-automatic?

Semi-automatics too, correct. So no pump action shotguns. Generally speaking you don't need them to (say) hunt grouse.
