Yeah, but read the challenge application. LA really doesn't think she can do it, but is willing to take the challenge for purposes of showing that tested under properly controlled conditions, the GSIC makes no audible difference to a person with normal hearing.

BTW: Has it actually been established that LA has decent hearing? I mean, I love music (season tickets for the local symphony and opera, etc.) but I'd be a terrible person for this test, 'cuz my hearing isn't so good - tinnitus. If I were to take the test, it would only establish that someone with cruddy hearing can't hear the difference - big fat hairy deal.

BTW2: Is JREF crossing into new territory here? With this challenge and the Amazing Growing man challenge, it seems to me that JREF is no longer just looking for people to prove their paranormal claims; it is now actively attempting to disprove them. Maybe this is food for another thread. Or maybe it's just a stupid thought.

OK, in all fairness, I went back and looked at what Kramer posted with regards to my app. I see that I did phrase that in a certain way. I'll admit right here that it was a CYA move. I knew it was going to be posted publicly and you know, I didn't want to look like a kook.

BPSCG, I know you didn't mean anything by it, but I do have a certain knee-jerk reaction when people talk about what I "think." I once had someone really obnoxiously do it so there's a leftover desire to Force-choke and the resultnant dissapointment that that doesn't work. I give you this, then. :hit:

-Hell if I know. I don't see any mechanism by which it would, but then, I'm not an engineer.

-Eh, not really. The test is to test it. I want the goddamned thing to work and I'm actually a tad curious. I'm one of those people that tends to go, "Hey. I wonder what'll happen if I do this?" and proceed to do it.

-Maybe, maybe not. The result of the other thread makes me even more curious as to whether or not it works. When you have that kind of a descent, it makes you want to know what the whole thing was about.

-Yes, but not as much as you might think. Even though I just kind of berated BPSCG, I'm not even slightly annoyed at BPSCG. BPSCG is pretty much ok in my book. (Hell, with a few notable exceptions, just about everyone on the forum is somewhere around ok in my book at the very least.)

I'm not stressing over this whole dealy. That's resereved for my finals and completing my honors work and my language lab work. This isn't worth becoming a stress monkey over. I'm going to kick back, call Kramer and Randi gibberish words when the required times to insult them come along and enjoy myself.

BPSCG, I don't think it's a stupid thought and it's quite possibly food for a new thread.

Hitch, I'm so not rich. I'd just rather concentrate on more... certain things. Like that I'd best to get cracking some books if I'm going to bring some of these Bs up. (not likely.)

Sorry, wasn't trying to be insulting or anything like that, and it's possible I overstated your position (I have to admit I didn't go back and parse what you wrote...). I was just trying to get across that you appeared to have serious reservations about the thing, but were willing to be tested under a strict protocol, as compared with the likes of Wellfed, who had no such reservations, but wasn't.

Actually, you want the thing to not work for anyone but you. That would mean you have paranormal abilities. If it does work for you, but works for everyone else too, then you haven't demonstrated that you have any paranormal abilities, but that the GSIC works in a paranormal way. You still get the million bucks either way, but wouldn't it be cool to have Superman's hearing, too?

But the test can prove only one of two things: 1) It works, or B) LA can't hear what it does. If LA can't hear what it does, it could be because it doesn't work, or it could be because LA is completely deaf in one ear and years of sitting in the front row at rock concerts has left the other with a 20dB hearing loss above 2 kHz, or...

The test can't prove that the GSIC doesn't work.
Even though I just kind of berated BPSCG, I'm not even slightly annoyed at BPSCG.

Au contraire…. We consistently require the claimant to prove his/her claim. Concerning the GSIC “magic chip” situation, the claimant simply has to show that she can tell the difference in sound between a treated and an untreated CD.

In the case of the “Orgeon Vortex,” the claim is that a person grows or shrinks when re-locating on a board, and that the phenomenon will be shown by photographic evidence. What’s the problem in understanding this?

If a CD changes in quality after having been “treated” by exposure to a chip of some sort, that’s paranormal – because it actually happens and has no scientific explanation. If a person grows as claimed, that’s paranormal – for the same reason. So?

I know I specifically posted that in response to your statement about schedules, but it was intended as more general mockery of those more steadfastly defending their abilities who can't be bothered to win a million dollars.

I'm sure if you had absolute confidence in the chip and your ability to pass the test, CFI-West would have you on their doorstep night and day until you got your money.

If only...... Geoff Kait, as a retailer who actually sold the GSIC was quite vociferous in it's defence on both the Audio Annex and Audio Asylum web-sites. In response to ongoing criticism of the device he promised to provide a definitive statement of the science behind the chip. So......Ta-da!!!! - here it is.

The following is an interesting thread from Audio Annex after one of their posters had had a GSIC analysed and examined under an electron microscope. Anonymous and geoffkait are one and the same person.

I think that the modified Base-Line test is quite a good idea, as it addresses one of my worries that I hadn't figure out quite how to express.

The basic problem with requiring the base-line test in the first place is to make sure that the applicant can confirm to his/her own satisfaction that the test setup is valid and that their powers are working correctly, yes? Otherwise, they could simply say, "Oh, my spirit guide was conducting Dante through Purgatory, and my crystal was tuned to the wrong station."

Unfortunately, this is really only applicable when we're talking about an applicant who genuinely believes that they have powers. But if we're talking about a commercial product, something that is supposed to be sold to the general public and to work for people without special powers, then it should work as long as it's installed properly, etc.
 
I've just fired off the e-mail so you'll probably see it in my thread soon, if anyone is still following this.

We had settled on a test date of July 16 during the IIG meeting. I was just informed today that I've been accepted into a program at UCLA for transfer students that runs from July 11-16. Anything that ups my chances of getting in takes priority over all else. Walt himself could hand me uber-tickets to EPCOT from his personal zombie pocket and I'd turn it down. Meaning that work is going to have deal and we may have to move the test to the 17th or to the afternoon of the 16th.

Yeah, I know I said my schedule was open. In the chaos of finals and such, I'd completely forgotten that I'd applied. This is my fault.

Yeah, I now join the ranks of "That date's no good even though I said, 'Ok,' before." So while I'm at it, Randi and Kramer's moms throw rocks in hell.

Of course the possibility does exist that I can call them tomorrow and they can say, "Oh. Too late," and the conflict will evaporate.

For those of you keeping score I have misinterpreted things, called Randi and Kramer names, and now screwed with a testing date. I am now just like every other applicant. Whoo!
