Gingrich? Seriously?

The truth is, Gingrinch knows how the game is played, and he is not at all stupid. Most of his big mistakes have been not because he was dumb, but because he is so self centered that he cannot seem to avoid either monetary or sexual self-gratification.

But he is, in fact a good debater. He never flubs his lines like Rick Perry did (again) last night. And he is good at making smarmy insinuations without actually coming out with direct insults.

But he will never be nominated. Too many skeletons in too many closets, plus most Republicans remember painfully how he was badly outmaneuvered by Bill Clinton in the "Contract with America" deal. Still, I do have to give grudging respect to a wily politician.

Also, Gingrich is not a natural fit for the Christian conservative that hates Romney.

I think what is happening with the polls is a response from an uninformed voter who is simply repeating a name to a pollster who is "hot" at the moment.

Of all the people who might run on a third party ticket, I'd say Sarah is the most likely. Other candidates know that if they torpedo the GOP, they can't run for dogcatcher ever again. Sarah knows this too, but she doesn't care. As she demonstrated by resigining from her last job, she doesn't want to hold office. She wants to sell books and be on TV. She cares nothing for the nation or the GOP or really, even the Tea Party. She cares about Sarah Palin. Period.

Sarah Palin will not run third party because she like Huckabee has been bought and paid for by Fox News. They want Obama defeated.

I know this is true with those who answer that they plan to vote in the GOP primary, but has that number, the ones who plan to vote, been rising or falling? Because it is possible that a loon like Paul could take it if the ranks are spared down to just the insane.

With the present economic situation it is crazy not to listen to Ron Paul.

Another winning scenario for Ron Paul is the possibility that this crazy race for the GOP nomination drives a lot of GOP voters insane.

Out of curiosity, are the delagates legally committed to specific candidates these days or can we actually see a good old fashioned floor fight at the GOP convention next summer?

Depends on the party rules. Usually they are committed on the first or second ballots. Some delegates go the convention uncommitted.

There's no way Gingrich can credibly run under a "Christian Values" banner. That's too surreal even for the current political milieu.

The nominee has to be Romney. The real question is whether some half-known religious crazy will then run on some kind of anti-Mormon, "True Christian", Bull Moose ticket. If so, the election is over, and we can hand it to Obama. If not, then we might just have ourselves a ball game.

But a year is a long time.

Yes, there will be “True Christian” third party candidate. There always is: usually it is the Constitution Party nominee with no consequence.

But in the end, it's got to be Romney, right? I mean, he just seems far and away the most capable to me. Maybe I'm partial towards him because he was governor of my state, but is the Mormon thing really enough to keep him out?

I mean, yeah, he's a Mormon, but he seems to be a lot less beholden to his religion than someone like, say, Perry. He doesn't have the moral failings of Newt. And he mostly comes across as intelligent and politically savvy.

Which is more damaging to Romney, the fact that he is a Mormon, or the fact that he was a governor of Massachusetts whose policies tended to reflect that state's liberal constituents?

With the anti-Romney voter I think it cuts equally both ways for the social conservative and the religiously-oriented Christian conservative.

VP candidate Rick Perry: A good, "clean", Texas Christian on the ticket, who will vouch for his old friend Mitt Romney.

Problem solved.

Or Romney could pick Senator Rand Paul for V.P.
This pick would bring the Tea Party and libertarians onboard the Romney campaign.

With the present economic situation it is crazy not to listen to Ron Paul.
Almost every economist agrees that bringing back the gold standard or eliminating the Federal Reserve would result in economic disaster for the US. Ron has a few good ideas (like decriminalizing drugs) but his economic ideas are pretty much insane.

He'd get a lot of votes in Texas if that's what it takes to get him out of the governor's mansion. Probably why most of his funding comes from Texas. It's an easy sales pitch. "Give us some money so we can ship Rick Perry to Washington."

I suspect most of Rick Perry’s money, 50 million, came from Jews here in the US and probably dual citizens in Israel. He won’t get any more of that money which will now go to Newt Gingrich.

I'd put money down that if Cain doesn't win the nomination, the winner will, as McCain did before him, pick a minority as running mate to counteract the "old rich white guys" thing.

If a minority is picked for VP it won’t be Cain but that Louisiana governor Indian guy.

Trouble is that it didn't help, and in fact, damaged McCain seriously.

If they are going to pick a VP for that sort of thing, they need somebody reliable with a spotless reputation.

In Illinois we have such a person, Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. The only Republican I voted for that year.

But she is neither exciting nor is she far-right-wing. And Illinois would suffer a serious loss if she left state government.

State Comptroller for Vice President: funny

Really?

The party of 'family values' wants to give a pass to a potential adulterer? Or is that part of 'family values' that only gets a "Wink, Wink. Nudge. Nudge." and has an expiration date?

They are apparently willing to give a pass to a black sexual molester.

Nobody has accused Cain of sexual molesting. Except you. I would assume you have some evidence... or more correctly, I would assume that if any believable person made that claim.

You'd like that, wouldn't you? You can dream, anyway.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are pulling for lower unemployment and stability in Iran.

I think Gingrich shares your dream, though. In at least one of the debates he said the GOP's top priority should be to beat Obama.

And after Gingrich beats Obama, he takes this country to war with Iran.

Ron Paul says these changes will be gradual. What is wrong with the dollar being backed partially by gold?

Decriminalizing drugs is the insane part of his plan.
