Firefox

Must be a really crap browser if you have to add all these optional "plug-ins" to gain the basic functionality built into IE!

Or click "Board Home" or something. Yes, that's quite annoying; IE doesn't allow the popup. I wonder why Firefox does? And I also wonder why advertisers think that sort of thing will impress potential customers.

I just tried NoScript, and while it certainly prevented the popup it also made sure I had to type this reply three times after losing it twice for reasons unclear. So I'm not impressed with that either ;)

Heh, the same thing happened to me and I thought I accidentally shut the "reply" window. It also prevents me from changing the editor mode in this reply. Is there a workaround for this?

I allow all scripts for "randi.org", you will also have to allow scripts to run from "yahooapis.com" if you want all the fancy bells and whistles.

built into IE after copying them from other browsers :).

Also the plugins let you extend functionality beyond that of IE, of course the difficulty lies in selecting which plugins you want and need. It also lets you make firefox look damn swank and minimalist.

I've found Adblock+ in combination with flashblock is more than enough to get rid of popups, if you update the blacklists for your own use.

Sure, I was just pointing it out IE didn't come with things like proper popup blocking and Certification warnings and tabbed browsing until years after firefox copied it from Opera.

So for the last month or so I've been using Firefox, since so many people say it's the shiznit.

I'm not impressed.

It does a terrible job of blocking popups, and it lets in all kinds of malware. My last anti-virus scan found 92 infections! Almost all tracking cookies, but still... I never had more than 2 or 3 infections using the latest version of IE.

And to top it all off, I am having shutdown problems (XP pro) that I have never had before and started the day I installed Firefox.

It does have a spell checker though, so it's got that going for it. but other than that, why the hell do people love Firefox so much? I'm on the verge of uninstalling it.

Anyone else have these issues?
IMHO, Firefox only has two things going for it: speed and a spell-checker. Other than that, it stinks.

I get almost no popups with IE7, but Firefox lets a lot of them through. Firefox is difficult to navigate; I find IE to be much more intuitive. Also, one website I visit frequently requires me to scroll through pages quickly. When I tried to do that in Firefox, it started doing this weird automatic scrolling thing that I had difficulty halting.

I used Firefox for 2 days while waiting for Microsoft to come out with a patch for IE7. I couldn't wait to get back to IE. I only keep Firefox on my machine because it's a good idea to have a backup browser.

And it renders pages correctly.

Client emailed me earlier - "The dots on our map (the locations of their company's facilities) have moved north. Any idea why"? Looks fine in Chrome. Looks fine in Firefox. Looks fine in Safari. I'm about ready to email her back and ask if she's nuts, when I decide to check it out in IE8, which I never use. Sure enough, IE has dorked it up. Looks like I'll have to add some "IE exceptions" to the CSS.

Me too. It is not infallible, apparently. Or perhaps it's less set-up than yours is?

In the rare instance where it fails I just tell AdBlock Plus to block the offender and the ad disappears.

Don't think I've done anything special or extra other than that.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I like Firefox 'cause it works for me.

I started out in the early days using Mosaic, then switched to Netscape Navigator, and I've tried Opera, Safari, Chrome, IE, and a few others, but Firefox does what I want and seems to work well, so that's what I use.

At work I have no choice but to use IE6 and, in my opinion, it blows chunks. No tabbed browsing, no blocked ads, and sometimes the page rending goes wonky.

Linux....? Used since 1996, malware, virii, NEVER

I use Firefox, mostly. With adblocker add-on, I can watch live streams from television sites and not have to watch the commercials in between segments. This is great for msnbc and comedy central. I get right to the video I want to watch without the annoying 15 - 30 sec commercials.

I run Opera and an additional local proxy to filter out all kinds of crap and almost never see a pop-up.

But i was able to reproduce what WildCat described on AboveTopSecret.

It's caused by a script by the company casalemedia.com who seem to be known for using very aggressive ad scripts for many years - one of the first hits google found for "casale media pop up" was this 2004 discussion where even one of their employees jumps in and plays innocent. A 2008 article:

Well, says Casale Media, “The technologies we use to deliver, target, and optimize your campaigns go far beyond established norms and standards for performance.”

Well, we’d agree with that.

The ATS site in general seems to be filled with all kinds of shady scripts. Quite hilarious if you think about the paranoid tendencies of much of the readers. Why don't you start a thread about it there, WildCat? Should be fun.

casalemedia.com is in my blockfile now.

This is part of the reason I keep pushing the MVPS hosts file. They already have casalemedia.com blacklisted, and probably have had them in there for years. And with a hosts file, it doesn't matter if you're running Windows, Linux, Mac OS, or OS/2; it doesn't matter if you're running IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Konqueror, Dillo; or mail clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird; or other Internet aware applications such as Acrobat Reader or your media player; even a virus (unless it's connecting directly to an IP address); whether the hack is in HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, PDF, Flash ... anything trying to get to any site listed in the hosts just won't get there. It's a superb first line of defense.
