So for the last month or so I've been using Firefox, since so many people say it's the shiznit.

I'm not impressed.

It does a terrible job of blocking popups, and it lets in all kinds of malware. My last anti-virus scan found 92 infections! Almost all tracking cookies, but still... I never had more than 2 or 3 infections using the latest version of IE.

And to top it all off, I am having shutdown problems (XP pro) that I have never had before and started the day I installed Firefox.

It does have a spell checker though, so it's got that going for it. but other than that, why the hell do people love Firefox so much? I'm on the verge of uninstalling it.

Anyone else have these issues?

Nope.

The issue I've had lately is that it's NOT allowing popups, even when I tell it it's OK. Haven't been able to figure it out, found various "fixes" on the web, but none seem to work so far. I've pretty much had to switch to Chrome. (this is on my Windows machine, which I really only use when I have to)

Pretty much any browser will allow cookies. I'm mystified as to why you got so few with IE. Is it because you regularly clear your private information?

I prefer to run Firefox in a mode that lets me say yea or nay to any cookie that comes along. Tools > Preferences > Privacy > Accept cookies from sites (checked) > Accept third-party cookies (checked) > Keep until = "Ask me every time". Whenever Firefox asks about a cookie, you can say Accept, Reject, or Keep until end of session (my favourite, because it screws with the tracking cookies), and whether or not you want Firefox to remember that decision.

As for ads and pop-ups, consider either the AdBlock plus plugin along with the NoScript plugin, or my preferred approach of the MVPS Hosts file. The MVPS Hosts file redirects the IP addresses of 14,000+ adware and malware servers to the black hole of 127.0.0.1. I like it because it blocks these servers for any program that tries to access them, be it any web browser, e-mail program, MP3 player, RSS reader, etc.

NoScript and AdBlock+ are what I use. Not much can get by. Plus I run other things in the background like Avast! and Comodo. I don't run into problems. Also there are a ton of other useful addons you can download. I recommend DownloadHelper (you can dl videos from almost any site except Hulu) and Download Statusbar (a nice addon that eliminates the popup window when you dl a file and puts its download status in a little bar at the bottom of the screen).

Tools --> Options --> Click on Privacy tab

Put checkmark in box next to 'Clear history when Firefox closes', then click on the 'Settings' button at the end of that same line.

Put a checkmark in all boxes in the History section, click 'Ok', then 'Ok' again in the Options box.

Close Firefox before running your next anti-virus scan to see if there's any improvement.

OK, I installed the AdBlock addon, but I still get popups. For example, I've been reading this thread at ATS: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread512723/pg28

After that page loads, I click on another page and I get a popup. Sometimes one in which I have to confirm to close! Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

@RayG - I checked those boxes, I'll see how it goes.

Oh, one more annoyance I forgot - when I'm downloading a large file (such as a pdf) in a separate tab the whole browser just freezes until it's fully downloaded.

NetFlicks still sneaks in a popunder when I go to a few sites but otherwise my popup blocker cleared them all away. I use Firefox but I installed a separate ad blocker, AdAware and Skybot (or some names like that) a long long time ago before I started using Firefox.

What are the popups advertising/asking you to do?

I just went to that page, and no popups for me.

You have to go to that page, let it load all the way, then navigate to another page in the thread. That's when the popup comes.

If you have the option right click - save as to download a .pdf so it doesn't open in another window. Otherwise if you open it in a new tab or window it will act as you mentioned. I don't know another way around it.

Also what page do you click on? I'm not getting anything after going all over that site. Download NoScript also if you haven't already. That in tandem with AdBlock plus is a very good combo.

Aha! NoScript seems to do the trick, thanks!

I think it's the plugins and extensions. Especially the Adblock extension.

Also webdevelopers love Firefox (nothing in IE comes close to being as useful a tool as Firebug) and most use it as the reference browser. Make it look pretty in Firefox, then make it work in IE6 & 7.

Or click "Board Home" or something. Yes, that's quite annoying; IE doesn't allow the popup. I wonder why Firefox does? And I also wonder why advertisers think that sort of thing will impress potential customers.

I just tried NoScript, and while it certainly prevented the popup it also made sure I had to type this reply three times after losing it twice for reasons unclear. So I'm not impressed with that either ;)
