Bush administration approves religious displays in National Parks, censors historical film

Recent decisions by the National Park Service have approved the display of bible verse plaques at the Grand Canyon; approved the sale of a book containing a "creationist version" of the making of the canyon; and blocked publication of interpretive guides which refute creationism.

Also, at the Lincoln Memorial, per a directive from National Parks Service Deputy Director Donald Murphy, a film showing historical footage of various rallies held there will be censored to remove shots of gay rights and abortion rights rallies - the footage will be replaced by shots of christian groups, anti-abortionists, and pro-war rallies which did not even take place at the memorial. Murphy calls this "more balanced" and says the film as it is implies that Lincoln would approve of gays and abortion.

I find these actions truly appalling and disgusting. I'll be writing my senators and congressmen about it, though I don't know what if anything can be done. Thought some of you here might be interested as well.

I guess one unconstitutional move deserves another.

What is it about some Christians, that they need public and government endorsement of their 'faith', in order to feel that it is valid?

I like the part about the woo-woo book. The book on sale in the park book store about how the grand canyon could fit into creationism. Yes, this book on sale is obivously part of the Bush theocracy conspiracy.

After all, its _on sale_ at the bookstore. The implications are staggering. Next thing you know, they will have Indian dreamcatchers for sale there (they probably already do).

Simply put, this article is a sleight of hand trick in trying to link Bush to these events. I'm surprised some of you didn't catch that. Some of the things it implicates are serious if true, others are not even with the slanted brush they paint it with.

If you want to post articles like this and get a blind amen, try democrat underground forums.

No, no need to link this to Bush, except for when he goes out in public and endorses stuff like this.

" EMS ( Environmental News Services )

Darn.. The stuff you have to trot out when there is nothing more relevant.. At least they didn't make it up...

Good thing there were two of our 384 national parks involved here. Or the headline would have had to say:

"Religion on Display in National Park; Christian Fundamentalist Influence on Park Service Decisions - "Faith-Based Park" Decried"

(puzzled look)

"Faith-based parks"--er, sort of; idiot censorship attempts by conservative group--yes; but where exactly is connection to the "Bush administration"?

So the "evil Bush administration conspiracy" in action here is the tautology that IF Bush had endorsed these actions, THEN he would have been linked to them?

Would this be a connection?

This July, NPS Deputy Director Donald Murphy, ordered the Grand Canyon National Park to return three bronze plaques bearing biblical verses to public viewing areas on the Canyon's South Rim.

Is this guy a Bush appointee?

By the way, I am not defacto rejecting the plaques until I see the presentation. Personally, I think they should put up plaques of Emerson but if the scriptures are used as inspirational literature I have no problem.

If its John 3:16, I have a major problem.

I think Bush is the chief executive or something.

For 33 years, three bronze Scripture plaques have hung at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, a gift from the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary in Phoenix. The plaques bore verses from the Psalms – 66:4, 68:4 and 104:24 – and elicited frequent positive responses from tourists all over the world.

“People are asking all the time about the plaques,” said Sister Pinea Zarkos, a member of the Sisterhood. “These plaques are meant to inspire people to acknowledge and give credit to the Creator who made this beautiful panorama. Any other artist receives acknowledgement for what he’s done.”

(bold mine)

I think that's a pretty straightforward violation of the 1st. It is very specifically an endorsement, I'd say. Well, the Sisterhood says it is, at least.

Well, Bush may not be aware of this, but there is of movement of the looniest of the loons--Christian Reconstructionism. Its late leader, R.J. Rushdoony (founder of the Chalcedon Institute), preached that democracy is a heresy and called for world dominion by a Leviticus-based cult of his "true" christians. Then, less outrightly loony (and therefore more insidious) is the "Wedge" movement--the Intelligent Design Creationists who have also declared their intentions to infiltrate many aspects of public life in order to make their religion the dominant factor in society. Groups such as these (not Bush) are, indeed, pushing for a theocracy.

The Bush administration, by promoting "faith-based" initiatives of various sorts, thereby encourages and abets the fundamentalist extremists.

Yeah? Why don't they want to give the artist credit for this?
