EVP anyone???

Anyone else get the feeling that we have suddenly got an influx of people from... other forums?

I personally find it very suspicous that anyone could join a sceptical forum and immediately befriend a poster like Mayday.

Something smells very fishy round here.

My friend dose this for helping herself and others through grief...I was the one who suggested she try for the prize money, but I wrote to Randi and he seems to think its stupid too
Really? I don't remember Kramer mentioning this particular application.

All I am saying is this:

I did get excited about my "little foray with EVP" but as for you several people dismissing it out of hand by saying that the magnetic tape recorder could pick up CB signals, radio transmissions and tv signals...that is just ignorant...magnetic tape has no connection to those signals....reallly it dosn't.

so I quess until I here my own deceased daughter who died 7 years ago on tape,,,i will also remain a bit skeptical.....sadly
Hi and welcome. No parent should need to go through the death of their child.

You present a paradox: The world is full of people, even we 'skeptics' ('critic' in my case) who sometimes want to use your grief and pain to serve their needs. Many people mean well, but some are predators.

Don't listen to us or anyone, seek the facts. With reason to guide you the predators will find it difficult to succeed.

Seeking true things, even painful ones, is better than living with false hope or lies. I strongly encourage your 'skeptic attitude' about EVP without telling you it is definitely a lie designed to give false comfort.

Read mayday's post above carefully. Within it are clues to why these kinds of beliefs make us angry. All those children heard on 'regular tapes' might be in hell or purgatory or captive by some evil spirit... whatever fictitious place suits believers. This because there is no real evidence.

Such is the reality and final product of superstition.

What about the microphone?

I still don't know what we are affraid of.....I don't like to live in fear, If we were affraid all the time then we wouln't have ever tinkered with electricity, undersea developement, outterspace exploration or transplant surgery.
The only fear I have when it comes to this sort of thing is the fear of self-deception, which many people seem to lack: If there was evidence that EVP was communications from the afterlife, I'd be quite happy. In fact, I hope that someone does manage to communicate with the afterlife and win the million.

The problem is that there are so many mundane explanations for these so-called "miraculous" events. This problem is compounded by the fact that so many people are unwilling to address these mundane explanations. See my new sig: How does a magician disprove someone's hypothesis that he's using a mundane trap door? He makes it impossible to use a trap door. Only when someone can demonstrate EVPs that couldn't be caused by auditory pareidolia, apophenia, fraud, or other mundane explanations, will it be worth spending any time contemplating paranormal causes.

From personal experience, however, I doubt believers will spend any time trying to come up with such an EVP: They'll just closemindedly ignore the mundane explanations for the perfectly mundane phenomenon and gape in awe at the false mystery they've created.

You seem like a rather peaceful soul. Thanks for your remarks
I will check out your web link.
Both Martha, the women who picked up her daughters voice and myself and many others also know that there are pranksters on the other side..but even that is cool isn't it? I mean...dismiss it away if you wish,,,but just understanding that there is a force that exists after death is pretty amazing isn't it?????... Snip..
How do you know there are pranksters? Cool? Stupid is what I'd call it.Your friend would do better to visit a grief counsellor or a psychiatrist-ake the tape recorder with her and get a reality check.
Ill understand there is a force that exists after death when you or anyone else can scientifically collect that force and replicate it.Until then you are just nuts.;)

What about the microphone...

I don't know...what about the microphone....it is not a reciever any more than a peice of tin foil would be a reciever if placed on your head....((((or so I understand)))) I could be wrong...
I will go back and read maydays whole script and maybe I will understand why some of you are discouraged or p*ssed of by his post...I am just a newbie....be gentle

Could you tell us more about this?

Who did you write to and what did they say?

To Bronze Dog

Hey,,,you sure could be right . There are even whole hog professional people capable of delluding themselves and making no proof available for critics or at least appearing that way on face value....case in point.....professor Gary Swartz who wrote the book entitled, "The Afterlife Experiments", he risks his whole teaching profession to uphold his meanderings and scientific research into the paranormal,,,then will not render himself to Randi and his team for scrutinty and a chance at a million....On principle???

Hey Ashlee

To answer your question...I wrote directly to Randi about a year ago...I was interested in trying EVP out for myself and I wanted to learn as much as I could going in to it before I wasted alot of time...Randi said..."go ahead and try it but it is just a hoax"
So I wrote back and said,,,oh,,well if your not even a little bit curious then I guess I won't bother you then....
Then this movie white noise stirred me up again.....and I ran across this aaevp website and then Martha sent me her book that she had vanity published which she didnt' make a dime off of, which tells the back story to the movie white noise....byw/thnks for hangin in on this discussion

So you didn't apply for the challenge?
And you were told this is all a hoax. And accepted that.
Until a movie came along.

But you still choose to believe it?

Well it's your time...

I'm getting a big old kick out of listening to the aaevp website examples.

So far, my favorite is the one that's mislabelled "Hendrick Marquette". It is clearly stating "Help me, Spock!"

Meanderings

Ashles,

I suppose I became disgruntled when Randi wrote to me personaly and said that it would be no use...with out even supplying a brief explanation as to why wor what or when he had ever experienced it...I was courious not out to proove something. And I did download the challenge, but ya, I didn't dive into it whole hog...I mean...I have a life too...and I am not a scientist, just someones mom.

One thing I'm curious about is the fact that all these clips are maybe a second or two long, and generally presented without context. Which is to say, without any recording or indication of what was said, or what questions were asked.

For those of you who have tried EVP, how much tape do you generally need to record to get one of these voices? Does it takes hours of recording to find a snippet of speech, or do you usually get something quickly?

Does anyone have a link where one could hear some longer passages? I'd be particularly interested in hearing a bit where a spirit/entity/what have you answers in response to a question.

Didnt' mean to rain on your parade guys

I quess that is the end of this thread then?? And not one of you has actually recorded anything out of the ordinary on a tape recorder, nor had any paranormal contact from a deceased person
and for the most part beleive that people who claim to talk to the dead are self deceptive....O.K. then, quess there is really no more to add to that then......thanks again for contributing;) Emily's mom

Scoll Experiment??

One last thing...anyone heard of the scoll experiments? they were conducted in the late 1990's...and are something of a mystery....photographic film has been littered with spirit writings when left still in the film canisters.....how wierd is that???
On one of the film containers was a blueprint of how to build some ITC device used for two way communication with those is spirit...the device is called the germanium thingy.....can
t recall exaclty..but its all there on your skeptics dictionary web page...anyone know about this???
