Euthanasia for the elderly

There you go again! :D Any rumor of Lurch for something many people would find repugnant is absurd, no such presumption for Bush!

[snip]

Well, no. Actually neither you, Tmy, doubt, or materia3 really questioned the rumor. Compare that to the instant skepticism (quickly turned back to "ON") about a rumor about Lurch, which is not "incredible" because the self same thing had already been proposed by Gov. Lamb of Colorado, and gave rise to a serious debate.

Patrick, the other rumor was about a possible draft for doctors due to a shortage of military doctors. That's nowhere near as implausible as Kerry suggesting we encourage the old folks to kill themselves to save the country money. If you believe those two things are equally plausible, then I fear for your sanity. Had you started this thread with the exact same post using "Bush" where you said "Lurch" you'd have received the exact same response. I'm sorry you don't believe that, but there's nothing anyone can say to convince you that the rest of the world isn't rabidly partisan.

The repugnancy of a draft is NOT equal to the repugnancy for encouraging the elderly to suicide. Start a poll to compare the two, asking which is more repugnant, if you don't believe me.

And I'm very tired of pointing out the same thing about the other thread. Among others, I pointed out that the premise of the rumor was faulty. That seems to be questioning it, and rather more effectively than swapping insults, diatribe, and straw men. That thread has been thoroughly derailed anyway, but the initial question wasn't "is this rumor true" but "is there precedent for conscription by profession". Everyone, myself included, got sidetracked into a discussion of military doctors.

Hi Patrick,

Wow, do you have a link to that? I would be very interested in seeing a governor actually admit to wishing to encourage the elderly to die.

Patsie, you are a joke...please don't try and deny people the fun of laughing at you...

Evidence for any of these staments?

E.g., see Tmy's post "A Military Draft for Doctors", and notice the total lack (up till now) of critical comment from the "skeptics" here for what the poster himself identifies as a rumor.

I didnt even mention Bush in my "doctors" thread so how is that a knock on him?

And when I say "I heard a rumor" I mean that literally. They talked about it on todays howard stern show to be exact.

Now I doubt you "heard" anything about euthanaisa. Other then from the voices in your head.

I do recall Lamb having comments on this issue. Lamb was quoted as saying something like: "old people have a duty to die and get out of the way." I found that (unsourced) quote, but I don't recall Lamb actually recommended euthanaisa. I believe that's Patroll's overactive imagination, although I could be wrong.

I did some Googling. All I got was religious sites that summarized Lamb's comments as exactly that: Lamb advocating euthanasia for the elderly. The other hits were other articles and speeches, all of which referenced Lamb's comment or comments in the vaguest of terms: "it's often attributed to Governor Lamb of Colorado that it would be beneficial for the elderly to die early." or some such. Nothing I found provided the actual statement, or even suggested when or where he said whatever it was.

It's out there somewhere, but beyond my Googling patience.
