I disagree, I think that Dylan did honestly believe what he said and then his doubt just slowly devolved to LIHOPerism, to what we see now. Watch his debates with PM, he was fanatical.
Actually, I disagree. I think the PM debates were a real turning point for him. His body language really belies someone who is uncomfortable in his shell. He doesn't really participate much, as Bermas appears to do most of the talking. There are a number of instances where Dylan admits that portions of LC are "not the strongest evidence we have." In the debates with Mark Roberts, he's quick to acquiesce to Mark's points. To me, that speaks of a person who didn't expect the response to Loose Change that he got. I honestly believe he was expecting the video to get about 100,000 hits on YouTube. He never expected it to get mainstream media attention or to have to defend what was essentially a fluff piece in front of real experts. Dylan new there were flaws. He knew he didn't have any real evidence, or a real theory, or anything else for that matter.
Loose Change got more attention than it deserved because of the widespread anti-Bush sentiment that started up in late 2005. People who hated Bush for, in my opinion, entirely legitimate reasons were more inclined to believe the conspiracy nonsense. In truth, the video simply reinforced some already negative conceptions about Bush, even if it didn't win all that many converts. It was because of this that Loose Change became a thing.
I think Bermas was always the fanatic, and Dylan was more interested in the fame. There's no question to me that Dylan never believed the stuff, but since he was so interested in getting his name out there, he was willing to ride the conspiracy bandwagon. To his credit, it worked. He did enjoy a brief period of fame, and the early fame was from adoring fans and people too stupid to know better. When Popular Mechanics started looking into it, something changed. Dylan would now have to defend a wildly indefensible position against people who knew how absolutely full of crap he was.
Dylan had a tough career during 2006-2008. Some interviews were with adoring fans. Some debates were with Mark Roberts, which I imagine to be like pulling teeth (that's a compliment, Mark!). Dylan isn't a moron. Even he had to watch those interviews and debates and realize that the vast majority of people who saw them came away with the conclusion that Dylan is either a moron or a lying, cheating douchebag. Starting in 2009, Dylan quietly bows out. The Loose Change Forums go silent. The number of Truthers at GZ is now less than the number of Heidi Klums currently in my living room. Dylan doesn't speak at Truther conferences or give interviews anymore.
So, Dylan, if you're still out there, reading 9/11 CT stuff like you were back in the heyday, let's be clear about something:
You're still a douchebag. You took money from neo-Nazis to fund your film. You filled it with lies and false accusations and told people to hate Dr. Sunder and Dr. Greening and Dr. Gayle with no cause. If you truly don't believe what you preached, then you should at least apologize to them. If you made a mistake, then you should at least come clean to your adoring fans and the morons who are still donating money to the 9/11 CT "cause". That's what people who aren't douchebags would do. Would you like to become that kind of person?
