In a speech outside 10 Downing Street he said:

"The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected.

The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered.

There can be no doubt about the result.

Across the world people have been watching the choice that Britain has made.

This will require strong, determined and committed leadership.

I am very proud to have been Prime Minister of this country for six years.

I have held nothing back.

The british people have made a very clear decision to

I think the country requires fresh leadership.

I do not think I can be the captain to take the country to its next destination.

In my view I think we should have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative conference in October."

He will still be there for a couple of months.

Part of me respects him for doing it now for as smooth a transition as poss

Leadership contests usually take a couple of months I think particularly if the party concerned is governing, this doesn't seem scheduled to run particularly slowly. Doubt it is a delaying tactic or anything like that just something Cameron has to get done (IE get out) first.

Can't say I blame him - the phrase used at work "Not my circus, not my monkeys" comes to mind. IMO Osbourne would be a fool to take the job on. It should be done by someone who wanted the exit result, maybe Bojo or Gove - or maybe on second thought . . . . . .

History keeps getting re-written. He was actually an OK Mayor of London. So was Ken Livingstone. Last year I was saying that it would have been better if Jeremy Corbyn had gone for that job instead of Labour Leader (and I would probably have voted for him if he had).

Since I seem to have a slight "rule" that good London Mayors would also be lousy PMs, that may well apply to Boris yes. For sure I would rather have Cameron. But I would rather have remain in the EU as well and that's tough luck.

I wish I could be a mouse and hide in a corner of the room in order to attend the next meeting between Cameron and Queen Elisabeth... :p

Will David Cameron enter in history as the worst UK prime minister ever?

Quite possibly. Outside war times his referendum has to be one of the most disastrous British political moves ever.
