Merged Australian Politics / Australian election

Today is the 53rd anniversary of the election of the Whitlam government. Here is the Whitlam ministry after being sworn in by the Governor-General, Sir Paul Hasluck. Of the men in this photo, only Doug McClelland (front row, second from right) is still alive, now aged 99.

Of all the seats held by former leaders of the federal parliamentary Liberal Party since 1943, only Wannon (Malcolm Fraser) and Cook (Scott Morrison) are still held by the Liberals. It is not coincidence that Fraser and Sussan Ley (Farrer) are the only Liberal leaders to hold country seats - the Liberals have lost nearly all their urban seats.

Robert Menzies: Kooyong (independent 2022)
Harold Holt: Higgins (Labor 2022, abolished 2025)
John Gorton: Higgins (Labor 2022, abolished 2025)
Bill McMahon: Lowe (Labor 1998, abolished 2010)
Bill Snedden: Bruce (Labor since 1996)
Malcolm Fraser: Wannon (Liberal since 1955)
Andrew Peacock: Kooyong (independent 2022)
John Howard: Bennelong (Labor 2022)

Scott Morrison: Cook (Liberal since 1975)
Peter Dutton: Dickson (Labor 2025)

By comparison, of Labor leaders' seats, none are held by the Liberals, and only Wide Bay (Andrew Fisher) is held by the Nationals.

Meanwhile, scumbag remains a scumbag.

With an even more damning finding. Justice Lee found the rape occurred on the balance of probabilities, which was fine as it was a civil case. The appeals court made a much stronger finding.

How scumbag can possibly imagine that the High Court will make a different finding is beyond belief. He will not be granted leave to appeal in my view.

He should just accept the result and any punishment, and fade away out of public view. Any further attempts to "clear his name" are just going to make it even worse.

Why are you disrupting this forum with trivia from the Whitlam years? This is more than 50 years old.
Oh, wow. Are only stories of future events allowable here? There were posts about the 50th anniversary of the Dismissal. Settle down.

Do you even read a post before responding? I have no idea how you managed to infer that I am only interested in "future events".

I have no problem with posts about significant historical events such as the dismissal or the famous "It's Time" campaign. But a 51 year old badge? Come on! At least shrink the picture so it doesn't amount to a Rule 6 violation.
