I really don't understand the counter argument. The guy was found to have been profiling latinos. What's there to not understand about that?

Besides all that, "race" is a social construct. IIRC, back in the 1900s US, there was a panic about the Irish and Italians, which was just like this panic today.

It´s whatever race the racist scumbag who does the profiling thinks they are. Their identifying characteristics are whatever the racist scumbag who does the profiling thinks they are.

Why are you demanding that racism makes sense before you admit that racial profiling is happening? Racism never made sense except in the heads of the racists themselves.
 
DDWW is missing the whole point. Racial profiling is not an effective tool because I have red haired, fair skinned Latino friends who you would never know until you heard their last names. That sheriff joe doesn't get that his tactics are ineffective, illegal, and based on his own racist bias is the problem.

Lots of people in AZ are sporting bumper stickers that say "I could be illegal"

I've already said that the concept of "race" is sketchy. It's a human construct and I'm not an anthropologist. I don't claim to be an expert on so called "races", ethnologies, national origin, cultures, etc. In fact, I really, really don't give a ****.

I only know that there are people who have dark skin, dark eyes and dark hair and don't at all look asian. The look like natives from Mexico, central and South America.

These people were targeted by Joe Arapio. He doesn't need to target white people. Just the brown skins that have those features.

I'm honestly not sure your of purpose in this thread.

What was the Sheriff Dept. success rate? How many stops to find one illegal? And just what is the racial mix of the illegals found ion the county? . Is Joes 'profiling' racial, or 'illegal immigrant' ?

In the concurrent thread about SAFs in NYC, the success rate is listed as ummm 1.5%, and the cops think that is acceptable justification for the unreasonable searches. Perhaps they both are illegal, but where should the lines be drawn?

Did you read the judges decision? Why are we having that debate when there has been a court case and finding of facts? The plantiffs did not sue for cash. They sued to a change in how they are being treated and targeted.

Well, if stops are being made according to whether or not individuals are actually committing violations or crimes, then I don't care how many Latinos are stopped. If, however, they are being made because they fit an officers impression of a latino and therefore might be guilty of immigration violations or some other unseen crime, then it is the officers who belong in jail (regardless of their ethnic heritage). It is a simple distinction.

I think he's trying to make the argument that since there is no such thing as "Latino" race, that it's impossible that Arpaio was practicing racial profiling.

And I think he's missing the point of why racial profiling is illegal.
