Former Chilean dictator dies at 91

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Gen. Augusto Pinochet, the fierce anti-communist dictator who ruled Chile with an iron fist from 1973 to 1990, died Sunday from heart complications, the Santiago Military hospital reported. He was 91.

The brief announcement by the hospital said Pinochet's condition worsened suddenly and doctors rushed him back to intensive care, from which he had been removed only on Thursday while recovering from an acute heart attack he suffered one week ago.

Well, I knew that heart attack was bad news when it happened last week, considering his age.

He'll be buried as he would have wanted, in an unmarked grave under a football stadium.

About damn time.

It makes me wish I believed in Hell, so I'd be comforted by knowing he was being tortured eternally.

Pinochet took power in a military coup, but left power in a democratic election. Whatever happened in between, it can't make him any worse than any other South American political figure, can it?

For example, what makes Pinochet any worse than Che Guevara?

One big a**hole less in this world. Too bad it's too late for the thousands and thousands of people that were killed at his command.

Well I'm amazed he died - last time he was at death's door all it took was a quick international flight to cure him! :(

Mycroft, are you claiming every single "South American political figure" took power in military coups, or was as bad as Pinochet, or was your post just really sloppy writing and thinking?

If we limit the field to South American figures that either did take power in a military coup, or who wanted to take power in that way, he doesn't really stand out in any way. Except for leaving power in a democratic election, maybe.

OK, I will take your original post was simply sloppy thinking then, given your newest set of conditions. Can't say I agree with you, he was one of the much more murderous in recent times.

Isn't there a wrecked garage somewhere from which he can now be strung by the heels?

Okay so we have a gratuitous insult followed by a completely undocumented assertion. I’m guessing a lot of people keep you on ignore?

I'll leave others to document the assertion, if they can, but the bit about sloppy thinking seems to be a reasonable description of the facts. A statement that includes all South American political figures but was intended to apply only to those who seized prower in military coups certainly appears to indicate a certain degree of sloppy thinking.

Thatcher's saddened.
By all accounts, she's now so demented that she can't leave the house.
Not long now...

Umm... The overthrow of a democracy and its replacement with a military junta that murdered and torutured thousands of people?

Pinochet was certainly my hero!

How about the fact that he deposed a democratically elected government and replaced it with a military dictatorship?
