Avoiding Win 11 and staying with 10

Indeed, I never suggested it was a complete replacement. And I get that when you're invested in the Apple Walled Garden it's hard to break free of it.
Yeah, ◊◊◊◊ off with that one. iTunes is far less walled than many other music apps in that, if you buy a song from Apple it's not DRM encumbered. Also the pain point was playlists. Are you seriously claiming that people's playlists are inside Apple's "walled garden"?

If they don't transfer, and there's no easy way to move it, then that's pretty walled, isn't it?

I wouldn't know. I don't have the same issues that a lot of people do. I never bought music on an application. I use Spotify and Pandora that just transfer my "playlists" or "stations" from device to device without any problems. It sounds like the products that gave him hassle were specifically Apple related (ipod and itunes).

That being said, I understand being heavily invested in dated software that doesn't have easy options to transfer from device to device. I work in IT after all.

A little update. I have Shotcut for Win 7-8 free download on the old laptop. It's a slow machine anyway but the program isn't running all herky jerky on it, it zips right to the next thing you choose quick enough.
It doesn't overload the memory at all that I noted.

I am just learning this program so it's likely I don't know what to expect yet but it does work. For a low budget entry into video stuff it seems good.

Shortcut?

I was quite satisfied with Win 10 on my laptop and managed to avoid the update, including a little registry script that was supposed to prevent it, but then I went away for a while, shut the computer all the way down, and when I started it up again I accidentally pushed the wrong button and now I have Win 11. It's OK, and no big deal. I haven't noticed any real problems. I preferred the look of 10, and for some reason the scroll bars on Win 11 windows are skinny and hard to grab on to, but otherwise no issue. But I don't do anything very sophisticated or unusual. Mostly internet and photo processing, and that's not really changed.

Microsoft have said that they are offering another year of free security updates via cloud accounts if you have one.

If it was up to me I would have stuck with Windows 7.

The best version.

I still have a traveling laptop with 7, and it works great. My only real complaint at this point is that unfortunately it is 32 bit, and can't handle some 64 bit programs, and unfortunately the photo software to process my wife's newest camera's Raw files only comes in 64 and won't load. The computer itself is an old "netbook," very small and pretty slow, but it runs many programs I like. It's hard to find one of that size that isn't a Chromebook now. Eventually I'll have to upgrade, but I hate to have to.

Irfanview still has a 32 bit version and 32-bit plugins including CamRaw to handle Raw files

Yes, several programs will open Raw files, but so far the only one that opens Olympus Raw files in its 32 bit version is Irfanview. Others either won't load at all, or if I can load a 32 bit version, don't open those files. Faststone also comes in both versions but its 32 bit one won't open Olympus files. But Irfan, as usual, seems able to open anything.

SkinniER, you mean? Who runs their UX Dept, Forrest Gump? Another reason to pass IMO, though they keep asking me to "upgrade"

I received a message saying my hardware is not compatible with win 11. So I am just going to stay with win 10 without updates.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my computer. It runs streaming video perfectly well. So I am damned if I am buying a new one.

I like Win11 on my laptop, and have absolutely no problem with it. With the right software, I can also play DVDs and Blu-rays that are non-European. But my desktop computer cannot be upgraded to Win11, and that really makes my blood boil. It is the faster of the two, and is perfect for me, but it can’t be upgraded because it doesn’t have some hardware piece supposed to make piracy impossible. I don’t do any piracy, so Microsoft now wants me to buy an entirely new desktop for no good reason at all.

It is not just the huge expense, but also the months of work until I have installed everything the way it is now.

I found a hack to upgrade the desktop in place anyway, and it sort of worked, but at 83% complete it came up with an “unknown error”. I have the uncomfortable feeling that it was not the hack, but some driver that made the upgrade fail.

My next plan is to install win11 on a clean machine with the hack. At least I then don’t have to buy a new computer, but I still have the months of work to reinstall all my programs.

Plan C is of course to buy a buy a new computer.

Is there some program that could transfer everything with licenses and settings from win10 to a new win11 system?
