The Biden Presidency

Not everyone gets a check. My first shot was direct deposit in my checking account. This time I got a VISA card with a $600 credit. I've tried to get cash from a couple of ATMs but the transactions have all been refused. Maybe I should go to a liquor store and try to buy $600 worth of booze. :p
Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason you needed cash?

Not sure where you are, but where I am, the majority of transactions seem to be cashless (either credit or debit card), partly because of Covid, partly because of just trends in society.

I recognize that it may not be as convenient as (for example) a direct deposit into your bank account, but I assume you would at least be able to make purchases with your prepaid-VISA (which means you have to withdraw less from your actual bank account).

I can certainly agree that most Americans only bother to pay attention to politics if it directly affects them, and not at all when it affects the actual country as a whole. As such, those people who choose to remain ignorant really will wake up to hearing about the budget being passed "as if out of nowhere."

More like austerity hang-wringing only ever seems to apply to legislation that might benefit the working class and the money spigot is always open for our bloated military or for giving handouts to the rich.

That may be somewhat accurate, but anyone who thinks the budget is passed with no discussion or debate (as per your Twitter quote) is astoundingly ignorant of politics.

If confirmed, Neera Tanden would make history as the first White House budget director with a troll army.

Yeah, I know, he can't. Yet.

I pictured Biden walking into his office on the first day, starting to hang up his hat, and then saying, "Wait. First, fire JoyBoy."

April 15 is the deadline to file taxes, but people don't have to wait until then. I filed mine a few weeks ago.

I would have already filed, except the State of Vermont absolutely screwed the pooch and sent incorrect 1099-G unemployment benefit tax documents to tens of thousands of Vermonters. The one I received had the right first name and middle initial, but the wrong SSN and last name. The state is also paying for identity protection for those effected. A very expensive screw up. /derail

Continuing the derail, your location info sounds a little like my town. It is kind of spread out and has a little village not visible from the highway, and a few years ago some clever town fathers put up a sign on Route 22A "Welcome to Benson, Just over the hill." Half the town is on the other side from the village, and did not much appreciate that. The sign came down soon after.

So far, I've gotten just about what I expected under Biden. A weak-spined accommodationist who has no taste for direct confrontation with the Treasonous GOP. But at least he's not Usurper Trump.

A White House official told a reporter pursuing a story about his relationship with another reporter that he would “destroy” her and that she was “jealous” of his relationship with his girlfriend. He brought up her sex life to belittle and intimidate her.

“I’m not joking when I say this: If you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands or buts.”

-Joe Biden to staff on Jan. 20

This abusive staffer has not been fired.

Well, the prohibition was about abuse of colleagues. The press has always been fair game.

But at least he's been suspended for a week.
After Vanity Fair published this account, the White House announced that Ducklo would be suspended for one week.

I suspect that's just the beginning. Dating a reporter who's covering the administration is likely a separate infraction.

I'm not sure "It's cool for press staff to sexually belittle journalists because they aren't technically colleagues" is really a good look.

Fire this toad. He's obviously has no idea how to maintain professional conduct and has terrible judgement. It's a dream job to work for the white house, it's not like they can't find competent candidates who aren't gross misogynists.

Like I said, this is likely just the beginning. I suspect that in a month or so he will be "pursuing opportunities in the private sector." His bosses certainly know he's damaged his credibility beyond repair.

On the other hand, they might decide he's been under unusual stress and shouldn't lose his benefits.
A month before the Iowa debate, Ducklo was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. By the time doctors discovered it, the disease had spread to his liver, his gallbladder, and his bones.

Politico made a complaint on January 21st and spoke with people in the White House.

The announcement to place him on suspension only came today after the story was reported. There were no meaningful punishment until the story started to cause bad PR.

Cancer doesn't make people misogynists. Feel bad for a guy that has a terminal illness, but I don't see what that has to do with his reprehensible conduct towards his fellow professionals in the workplace.

Biden talked tough about a zero tolerance policy towards sexist and hostile working environments in his administration. Seems that was mostly puffery. Every day this creep stays on staff puts the lie to Biden's claim.

I think most promises don't tend to work out in the dark. It's why we need a light shined on instances like this. Then the fact that Biden made such a claim creates the necessary pressure to act.

I hope I don't sound like some cop out "The system worked" BS--it shouldn't have to take the threat of consequences to get a promise kept. I think of my point as a description of how to get a promise kept. Sometimes.

Sure, but that means the brunch party has to end. Adversarial relationships keep people on the level.

It's great Biden beat Trump, but he is in a position of power that needs to be rigorously scrutinized.

I don't think too many reporters plan to give Biden a free pass. That's not how they build their careers. They certainly didn't give one to Obama. But the return to what some might call "regular order" is a stunning transformation. The fact that they hold daily press conferences with an intelligent, responsive press secretary is like entering another world.

I think a real problem is that reporters will be coming after Biden about trivial stuff, comparable to Hillary's emails, just to prove how tough they are, after being steamrollered for four+ years by the Trump crowd.
