First the sun was blotted out through a good bit of the USA, then Houston half destroyed by flood. Now we have forest-firestorms across the western USA, and Miami in the cross-hairs of a Category 5 Hurricane.

Then we hear about this.

God seems angry about something.

I'm getting semi-concerned wondering what might be on the best seller lists in a couple thousand years.

Play the LASCO C2 and C3 gif movies here. They show the M5 CME headed our way. As of 11am PST, a view of the X9 CME has not reached the camera.

Looks like the Sun popped a pimple.

Yes, the CME is on the gif movie now and it's very much Earth directed. Aurora activity from the M5 CME has arrived, and X flares are fast so it should overtake the current CME and there will be incredible aurora activity in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Naturally there is a thick cloud of hazy smoke over here on the north-left-coast and any possibility of seeing said aurora is about zero probability unless we have some miraculous shift in the winds. Of course if that happens it will probably mean clouds blowing in from a disturbance over the ocean. lose-lose

Oh absolutely. A massive solar flare will not reverse our knowledge, just our power to screw up the planet.

Oh, I think you'll find the complete loss of our ability to keep that knowledge in digital form will reverse quite a bit of it, especially given the massive drop in population and wars that would follow. You'd see a dark age worse than any other before, a pretty steep reduction in life expectancy and quality of life, an increase in child mortality rates, etc.

That sunspot is simply crackling. Six more M flares including an M7, and another X1. Some of those CMEs will likely hit Earth at least with a glancing blow.

Sigh, if there was even a place to drive to tonight with clear skies it would be worth a try. But alas, smoke is on the air. I even have ash on my car.
