Holy crap!
MAJOR SOLAR FLARE: On Sept. 6th at 1202 UT, sunspot AR2673 unleashed a major X9-class solar flare. X-rays and UV radiation from the blast ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a strong shortwave radio blackout on the dayside ofour planet. The explosion also likely produced a CME, although we have not yet confirmed this possibility. Please stay tuned for updates about this event.

We are already waiting for a class G-3 solar storm to hit. All this does is guarantee clouds here in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of NYS.

Sounds like a Michael Bay movie.

X-9 Class Solar Flare!

With Coronal Mass Ejection!

Starring Carrington Event!

I just read (on a survivalist site so....) that the Carrington Event
The most powerful flare on record was in 2003, during the last solar maximum. It was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. They cut-out at X17, and the flare was later estimated to be about X45
so hopefully millennials won't have a mass die-off from electronics withdrawal."

First the sun was blotted out through a good bit of the USA, then Houston half destroyed by flood. Now we have forest-firestorms across the western USA, and Miami in the cross-hairs of a Category 5 Hurricane.

Then we hear about this.

God seems angry about something.:covereyes

No chance.

An earlier M5 flare sent a CME our way. It is due to arrive tonight. The X9 flare wasn't Earth directed but the prediction of if we'll get a glancing blow has not yet been made.

Play the LASCO C2 and C3 gif movies here. They show the M5 CME headed our way. As of 11am PST, a view of the X9 CME has not reached the camera.

The explosion also produced a CME. However, available coronagraph images are not yet sufficient to determine whether or not the CME is Earth-directed. Please stay tuned for updates about this event.

Coronagraph imagery from STEREO A shows just how eruptive the X9.33 solar flare was. From STEREO A's point of view we are looking at a far side halo coronal mass ejection. It looks truly massive and seems fast as well. We still have to wait for SOHO/LASCO coronagraph images for a more detailed analysis but the plasma cloud likely has an earth-directed component. The DSN will be in contact with SOHO again starting at 18:30 UTC so expect imagery to come in after this time. We will do our best to update with a detailed analysis later tonight when SOHO imagery becomes available. In the mean time enjoy this animation of the coronal mass ejection as seen by STEREO Ahead COR2:
