I would proabably post this in the "magic" section except that the person involved, if the report is accurate (it is originally The Sun - not the er...highest of journalistic sources) was "trying to prove she had psychic powers"

A woman nearly drowned while performing a stunt on Uri Geller's new German TV show.
Amila, 26, was a contestant on The Next Uri Geller, who was trying to prove that she had psychic powers. Her challenge was to guess a four-digit code, which would release her from a tank filling with water.
She was rescued from the tank by show assistants with bolt cutters after 25 seconds underwater.

Amila was voted through to the next round by the public and Geller is keen for her to repeat the challenge.
"I am afraid that if she doesn't do it again she might have a major phobia of this performance," he said. "People expected me to give her a very negative verdict, but I didn't. I was very impressed by her confidence and her courage."

They didn't have a better backup solution than bolt cutters? Why did she have to be underwater to guess the code? Why did she immerse herself in the tank if she didn't have psychic powers?

Incredible. Simply incredible. But yes, I may withhold further judgment until I get a more credible source.,

That is horrifying.

I remember reading about a girl who claimed that she could live without food and when she was put into an area for scientific observation she died.

It's so sad that people are willing to die for their woo.

She nearly drowned after 25 seconds? Even extremely unfit people should easily be able to hold their breath for at least double that. Unless it took them another couple of minutes to cut her out, I don't see how that could possibly be counted as nearly drowning.

While I agree with sg1985 that it's sad people are willing to die for their woo, I think it's also worth noting that this does at least indicate sincerity. I can't see a fraud agreeing to stunt like this since they'd know they would fail. Amila may be lying to herself, but at least she's not lying to everyone else.

Something tells me that she will succeed next time. Getting out of the tank, I mean :D

There is not enough detailed and accurate information from the article to tell if removing the woman with bolt cutters was part of the act.

I say this because Mr. Gellar said
I am afraid that if she doesn't do it again she might have a major phobia of this performance
This could indicate she will try the stunt again, so if the rescue were to by hyped up, it could increase viewership. In other words, this could be a publicity stunt to get more people to watch another installment of The Next Uri Geller.

It could be possible the rescue was staged, and her safety was never at risk. I don't know the answer.

If this was a legitimate rescue due to an almost accidental drowning because of a poorly-devised stunt, this could indicate stupidity and/or negligence.

Im sure The Sun reported this as "female illusionist".

ETA: Yes,every report on Google states this.Although the guessing of numbers is strange.

Any insurance company or corporate lawyer involved would freak out at the thought of having to pay out and would certainly not let the trick to be repeated if the risk was in any way genuine.

Maybe she panicked?

I've seen the video on you tube and she didn't panic at all. She was also voted through to the next round despite failing the challenge.

The program is in German so I couldn't understand what exactly she was supposed to be doing.
I read she was supposed to guess 4 numbers but only got 2. Any one know what trick she was trying to perform and how she managed to eff it up and only get half right?

It's so sad that people are willing to die for their woo.

Without knowing more, there's no reason to believe that it wasn't just a trick gone wrong rather that her believing the woo. Few (if any) of the people on this show actually believe the woo they're playing. They know they just magicians/mentalists- even if they call themselves 'paranormalist' or something else.

How come one of the rascals waiting their turn to come on the show in the green room didn't see this coming and warn the rescue people to be on their toes? Why can't Geller attract quality psychics to be on his show? His are useless.

.
quality psychics?????
What would one of these be?
Can those two words really exist in the same sentence?

You're absolutely right, that's why there are strong indications that her "failed" stunt and subsequent "rescue" were staged.

Sounds totally bogus. Starving to death can take weeks. It's a slow and agonizing way to go. For at least the last few days, the person would be too weak to move. What kind of observer would stand there and watch the person die?
