Windows 7 questions

Blocked, or not allowed due to incorrect Win7 version?

Can you screenshot the error?

Also, if it is a versioning problem please call CS at this number for help in obtaining the download and key for the correct version (*not for copies bought in stores, only for the on-line purchases/Downloads through Microsoft/Digital River Student Pre-release program):

I got it from a store, so back to them I go.

That now looks the case, but this really sucks. I have an enormous amount of files to back up. (Yes I know, you should regularly back up files.....)

Honestly, I would encourage clean installing anyway. One thing I consistently hold against Microsoft are their poor upgrade routines.

Use the easy transfer tool, it will take some time but it is automated and works very well, I was really impressed with it (and that was from XP to Win7), much improved from the old XP days!

What I did was transfer the files across my home network to a partition on my new PC so that after the Win7 upgrade the importing into the newly installed Win7 PC was lightening fast, about 30 gigs and under half an hour.

Thanks all for your advice. My eldest son, the IT professional, tells me that he would do a complete re-format, because of "all the crap" on the computer.

Of course by "he would" he really means "I could, but I couldn't be bothered, do it yourself".

Hey, he's a good boy, but completely averse to working on a computer he isn't paid to work on. ;)

I completely understand that sentiment. I don't wear the "No, I will not fix your computer" t-shirt for the laughs....the same goes for the "I void warranties" t-shirt.

You won't believe what happened when I took my Windows 7 Upgrade back to the store (on second thoughts, you probably will).

I took the pack and the receipt to the counter and was immediately told to go see the tech sales staff. I explained that this upgrade does not work with Vista Ultimate, that I told staff that I was upgrading from that version of Vista when I purchased the upgrade and further that there was nothing on the box which stated that the upgrade wouldn't work with all versions of Vista.

They both looked over the box and agreed that my position was reasonable, but then went on to say that they couldn't do anything because it was used software. "Hang on" I said, "how could I have used it if doesn't run on my computer". Well, why did you take the plastic cover off the box was the response. "What would you have done if there was nothing to show it wouldn't work?" I asked.

After trying to explain that the store's (Harvey Norman to Aussies reading this) and even Microsoft's return policies are trumped by consumer law that allows people to return goods that simply don't work, I asked to see the Manager. "I am the manager" said the barely 20 year old kid. "Okay, the franchise holder then" I said. "Sorry, she's busy".

By now I was starting to get the attention of other customers, so I then asked for the names of the "Manager" and his boss, explaining that it only costs $30 for me to lodge with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, but it would cost them a half a day's wages, some adverse publicity and an inevitable result against them. The franchise holder then miraculously became available and she undertook to ring Microsoft. Four phone calls and another hour later she said that the best she could do was to give me a credit note rather than a refund. Although tempted to take it further, I accepted the offer.

But the whole process took over a hour and a half.

Microsoft, you can go and get stuffed.

That sounds like an ordeal and a half. Sorry to hear that lionking.

If you do get another version of Windows 7 and have issues, please feel free to PM me or post here. I am sure we all can help you sort the install out.

Yeah, if you have a way to back your files up then we'd be more than happy to walk you through the clean install process using an upgrade disk.

You're right. I'm still getting over being expected to carry the $A188 cost. These guys could teach public servants about bureaucracy.

Thanks folks. Even though I got a result, I will email Microsoft to let them know about my experience and their packaging which, at the very least, is misleading.

I know it's not a perfect analogy, but this upgrade stuff is like going to a Ford dealer, trading in your mid-range car to buy a new base model only to be told that you can only buy a new mid-range car. Jeez, who's the customer here?

You are confusing your role of 'customer' with 'Microsoft Money Pit'. Especially when you consider all the great extras you get with Ultimate, that most home users couldn't do without.

Yeah, I looked at those things, like the ability to join a Windows network domain. Which I am sure I can't get by without, even though I have no idea what it is. And only for an extra $A300. Bargain.

Same story with me, it did a very nice job. I was running the Beta so had to do a full install rather than an upgrade, and was frankly expecting to do a lot of faffing around to get things back up to speed, but it was very straightforward.

(Except that I forgot to reinstall Office afterwards and got a flea in my ear from Mrs Richardm - "That great new system you installed doesn't work". Why can people not differentiate between operating systems and applications, grumble grumble)

I finally bit the bullet and purchased the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade and am still getting used to it.

Is it my imagination, or are webpages opening more quickly than Vista?
