Windows 10

The icon bothers me not at all.

My wife has been bugging me for a new computer. This one does everything she ever needs, but she wants a new one, after all it's been three years. My excuse, so far, has been "Wait until Windows 10". I plan on changing that to "Wait until we see the reviews on 10", then "Wait until 10.1". Then I'm out of excuses and will have to upgrade this one too.

I feel fortunate (or smart) never to have experienced Windows ME, Vista, or 8.

Three years is pretty quick.

I'd like to encourage you to put it up for adoption rather than having it put down. I often take in older computers, give them a forever home, and let them live out their natural span in a quiet, loving environment with plenty of electricity and walks on the Internet.

Non profit organisations around here can buy ex government computers for about $80-$120. They are good ones. They normally come with Windows 7 and Office 2010 (including Outlook).

I bought a new one recently because my old one had XP and was 5 years old. Suggest you get a new one for its 4th birthday. Unless of course the computer is basic and your wife can show slow response times on some applications.

Edit. But if it has Windows XP (on a 3 year old computer???? How do you count to 3 - 1, 2, 4, 3?) then it should be replaced now.

As Rat says you can hide the icon. Method
1. click on the small triangle located with the system icons. A number of additional icons appears.
2. Just below these icons is a link called Customize... Click on this. A menu appears.
3. Look for the icons you do not want, such as Windows 10. Change the option to say only show notifications.
4. Click on OK. Problem solved.
 
Just switched the PC on to find I've been upgraded to the RTM version of Windows 10, no more text in the bottom right hand stating the preview build.

ETA: I'm also going to see whether I could use Edge as my browser for week or two, only way to get to know it.

Edge isn't going down too well. It doesn't remember its window size or location between sessions. It's such a small niggle but one that really annoys me! I like having my desktop set in a particular layout and having to resize each time....

This illustrates an interesting example of the effects of different usage patterns.

I doubt I ever would have uncovered that. I tend to work full screen almost all the time, switching screens entirely when I switch tasks. I do use multiple windows occasionally, but it tends to be very purpose driven, such as moving files around, or side by side comparisons, or working through a list of instructions. When I do that I usually have to resize them at that time to suit whatever the purpose may be. They are rarely the same from instance to instance.

I believe Darat is referring to Windows 10 switching to a rolling release for its Windows 10 patches, when they are ready they will be released.
 
I'm going to install it when the big day gets here however it is no longer a priority.
I'm sold on the Surface format and when they release a PC version that will be the last OS I will use.

Not having to worry about anti virus programs or ad/malware is great for what I do.
I don't have a problem with the propriety of Windows programs.

Most versions of the Surface currently run Windows 8.1 which is what runs on PCs. Surface is being updated to Windows 10 just like PCs. (perhaps your thinking of Windows RT (no longer used on Surface tablets) that was a version of the OS for the ARM processor and will live on as Windows 10 mobile on phones)

Windows in all its versions is susceptible to viruses and ad/malware, this applies to all operating systems from all vendors. Microsoft does install their anti-virus and malware tools by default now but they are no panacea.
 
Can't see why there would be such an option. You can always reinstall any old version you have knocking around.
