Windows 10

I got the notification too! But I plan to do a full backup, and wait until the middle of the night to do the upgrade -- maybe even wait a day or two for the inevitable first patches.

I was mistaken. I thought it was the notification to do the actual download, but it was just the icon saying "Get Windows 10" that came up again after rebooting. Clicking on that says it won't be ready until July 29. I may just wait until, oh, Labor Day.

That's my plan too, wait until after the first patch Tuesday before upgrading, after doing a full backup or two.
Keep up with the times patch Tuesday is the past!

And given the extensive preview programme the released version will be the equivalent of 6 months down the line for previous versions.

I suggest wait at least a month before upgrading. Leave it to those that want anything new to upgrade and do the post release testing first. Also look at any reviews that come out in August. Then decide how quickly to upgrade.

"Go find out and report back." :D
I already have with every previous version, and there's not much to report back about. When I've heard other people's complaints, they mostly turn out to be people crying because it doesn't look exactly the same as the previous version, although I suspect they would still be complaining if it did.

I'm not crying, I have no complaints, I haven't bothered looking at it yet, and I won't until I'm personally satisfied that it's an actual upgrade.

Aaaand it also depends on which taste of windows you are running. If you are running home editions (up to premium) you cant schedule your updates anymore. Thats only from Pro up...Thats also the only complaint I have about the system.

I've also reserved my copy/update. Having been in the Insider program, I have to say that W10 is a nice surprise on top of the older versions.

MY biggest problem right now is not being able to get an answer on wether or not I need to pay for a new W10 update in the future if something happens to my rig that needs a significant hardware change, IE HD failure, and I'll have to reinstall it bottom up 1year and 1 day after the update goes live. You know, have to resort to a complete reinstall from windows 7 up.

Cant seem to coax an answer out of the boards.

Does anyone here know if the update comes with a product key that I can use for reinstallation purposes?

The FAQ says that once you do an upgrade you can create an install media that will let you do a clean install if needed at some future point.

Windows 10 FAQ said:
Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

I will let it install on day 1. I'm on Win 7 Ultimate 64 and have heard nothing to make me hesitant about Windows 10.

That has already been done and it started in January.

I just found a permanent way to get rid of the notification. Also, it's not just a notification, but an app that's running permanently in the background.

http://www.askvg.com/how-to-remove-get-windows-10-app-and-its-icon-from-taskbar/

The link details several different ways to hide and/or get rid of thing. For the tl;dr crowd, probably the easiest and safest way is to uninstall and then hide update KB3035583.
And it's back! Microsoft reinstalled update KB3035583 yesterday and the icon showed up in my system tray this morning. I plan to uninstall and hide it again as soon as my antivirus has finished scanning my system (coincidence, I didn't start a scan due to this, it runs automatic scans on Friday mornings). I wonder how many times we'll have to keep doing this.

Why is that icon bothering people so much? I hid it on the onemachine I have with not much screen real estate (I hide all the tray icons on it) and just ignore it on the rest.

It's a way to complain about trivial things.
RTM is out, rather nice it is too, but wait until after the 29th for the next round of "Microsoft ate my hamster".

In my case, it looks just a little too much like my email notification icon when seen from a distance or out of the corner of my eye. Minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.

I'm a little more worried about the speculation that it might download or install something come the 29th. I don't want Windows 10 on my current machine (I plan to buy a new Windows 10 machine in a few months), and I don't want some huge file taking up space on my hard drive. That is just speculation of course, but I figure it doesn't hurt to uninstall this app whenever it shows up.

My co-workers playing with Windows 10 are very happy with it. Now if Microsoft would clean up Outlook like the supposedly have the browser.

In our school environment the best thing will be the 'refresh' settings. No need to image a machine, you can reinstall the OS and keep files or do a wipe.

Windows 8 has some nice features and 10 is supposed to be an extension.

The browser, ("Edge"), is actually quite good in the RTM. It's still a bit too tied to Bing atm but I expect that will change in August. Some people, I hear, are okay with Bing though. And if Cortana turns you on you'll be Bingified anyway.

Haven't played with Outlook as my mail is under the watchful of eye of my Apple Army, but for basic e-mail functions 10 itself seems quite good. Also, Edge and Mail have the new sexies as standard.

With regard the install process, yes it's very good wether doing a new install, upgrade or update.

Also... Notification Center makes notifications less obtrusive for those who get annoyed or confused by such things.

I've re-hid it on one of my PCs because I'm afraid I'll screw up and accidentally upgrade, I already accidentally reserved an upgrade on it when the icon first appeared.

The PC has some specialty engineering software that won't work above WinXP without major expense and inconvenience (XP mode allowed me to move to 7). So if I accidentally upgrade I'd then have to take the time to get Win7 back running on it (and since it's in my home office my employer would rightly expect me to fix my screw up on my own time).
