Windows 10

To just hide it:

Click on the little UP arrow, go to Customize.

Find the icon (GWX) in the list and change the setting to hide or show what you want. I put it to "Only Show Notifications" and the icon doesn't show in the taskbar now.

For Win7, it's the guillemet [»] button in the system tray area (where that icon shows up).

That only works until the next time you restart the machine, then you have to hide it all over again. I've been hiding it every day (I shut down my laptop every night before I go to bed) because it looks too much like Outlook's email icon when seen out of the corner of my eye.

I'm not going to do the update because I'm planning to buy a new laptop shortly after Windows 10 comes out. My battery just died, I have either a bad NIC or a bad ethernet port, and the machine is 3 years old. Since a new OS is about to come out, it makes more sense to buy a new laptop than to spend $85 on a new battery. That and I just prefer to have a factory-installed OS rather than having to deal with doing a update myself. I've seen too many people on forums saying "I installed an update and now X doesn't work!"

I'm looking forward to Microsoft's new incremental update model for the OS. It'll be nice not to have to buy a new machine every 3-4 years because the OS is outdated.

Just verified this. That sucks.

I usually only put it in Hibernate (which does keep it hidden) and only completely Shut Down about once a week.

What would that be... update Tuesdays? :p

(not to be confused with update Monday, update Wednesday, update Thursday, etc. :D )

I just found a permanent way to get rid of the notification. Also, it's not just a notification, but an app that's running permanently in the background.

But there is one problem in this app! Even if you reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade using this app or cancel your upgrade reservation, the app always keeps running in background and its White Windows flag icon is always visible in system tray of Taskbar. You can't close the app permanently. It just hides the window and sits in system tray.

Although a small icon in Taskbar is not a major problem but sometimes people find it annoying to have an extra process running in background and consuming system resources for no good reason.

Also many people may not want to upgrade their computers to Windows 10, in that case this app will be unnecessary for them and removing the app will be the best option for them as it may download the huge Windows 10 setup files (around 3GB) in future.

The link details several different ways to hide and/or get rid of thing. For the tl;dr crowd, probably the easiest and safest way is to uninstall and then hide update KB3035583.

Even doing an End Process in the Task Manager does not get rid of the thing. I detest a feature that does not have an opt out. I imagine it runs so that the downloads can be meted out to those who requested, at Microsoft's discretion.

That is exactly the reason. If you really don't want to see it, uninstall the update that put it there. If you agreed to it, it will download the OS upgrade incrementally, rather than have hundreds of millions of people download it simultaneously on the day of release.

I can live with that for the month or so it's going to take, as long as I have the option to do the changeover at my discretion after the downloads are complete. But I somehow doubt that will be the case.

Any good sources to give me an idea whether to let it download or not? Three year old Dell laptop, Core i5, god-knows-what ram and disk space. (I'll see if I can figure it out.) Win7. (I liked XP better.) NOT power users, not at all. What'll it do to performance? Will it fill my disk and ask for more? Will it pull some of the old MS tricks and delete or cripple competing aps? Enquiring minds want to know.

The three bar menu (top left) of the Windows 10 reservation applet has a selection (Check your PC) to run the Microsoft Win 10 compatibility test.

When I ran it it told me my Netbook's Intel HD 4000 graphics were not supported, but a Google search found a statement from Intel saying the updated driver will be ready for launch day.

I got the Win10 upgrade reservation notification on my 2 Win 7 machines at home, but my Win 8.1 tablet hasn't offered me the Win10 upgrade reservation option.

Anyone know what's up with that?

My Touchscreen Win8.1 Netbook didn't get a notice on the start screen although I read somewhere it's supposed to get a notice there. I did however get the notification icon on the desktop screen. So if you can look at a the Win8.1 desktop on your tablet (Win+D) you might see it there.

From the FAQ on the upgrade site.

Do Windows Phone devices qualify for this free upgrade?

Yes. We are working with Windows Phone 8.1 partners to make the Windows 10 upgrade available to most phones later this year.****

Not sure if "Phone" equals "tablet", but that may explain the lack of notification.

I get mine July 21st.

Finally getting internet explorer in it's grave has something to do with why this will be free for awhile.

Also, you will never be able to pirate windows 10-how, I guess I'll find out in July.

I don't really need it that much since I'm trading up to Windows Surface 3 pro. You get hooked not having to worry about anti virus-root kits-ad and spyware or any other replicator/hijacker.

After the experience of upgrading 8.0 to 8.1 and putting Classic Shell on top I now have an irrational fear all major upgrades. Comments here are reassuring though - will check this thread regularly :)

I've been using the Windows 10 Preview on my primary computer since the beginning of the year; even in its unfinished state I've liked it better than any Windows I've used up until now.
