Windows 10

I still can't get my Dell win8.1 tablet to upgrade. I guess I better check the Dell site for updates.

Two minor media player app quibbles : you can't select different audio streams (at least for .mkvs, don't know about DVD or Blu Ray yet) and fullscreen playback hides my on screen volume meter when I change it.

Also found that, when using the mail app, you can't change the relative widths of the folder list / mail list / preview pane. You can resize the entire display, but you can't, for example, make the preview pane really really narrow and widen up the mail list.

One feature I like which others may or may not : I fired up Chrome and clicked its <set as default> button. Rather than simply change it spawned the default app control panel. I had to manually select Chrome for the default browser. Only took a couple of clicks, and I can see it coming in handy in those rare instances where you forget to untick some obscure option when installing a new program and it sets some bit of crapware as your default mail program or whatever.

I would strongly suggest people go through all of the settings options, especially in privacy. There are a number of options which might not be alarm bell worthy but are still nice to know are there and what they're doing.

I have an idle Dell Dimension 8400 with a fried hard drive. It had Windows XP on it. Does anyone know offhand if I can just buy a new drive and install Windows 10 on it?

I use Firefox and I'm not having any problems. I did have a problem with my internet connection dropping out intermittently since the upgrade, but reinstalling the network adapter driver seems to have fixed that.

I would hazard a guess that you are.

No, that would be me. Firefox was opening one tab after another, a couple every second. None of the suggested fixes worked. I've uninstalled it now and used every tool I had to wipe it from my laptop. I'm fine with Chrome. I tried Edge, but I have to have Ad Block.

I used Fences with Win7. It organized things, but they still covered up the pretty wallpaper I have of the sun as seen in Hydrogen Alpha light.

Maybe it's a version thing, or maybe you just overlooked the feature, but all I have to do is double click anywhere empty on my desktop and everything goes away until I double click again.

Might be worth another look.

In that case, the answer to the question originally posed by Gawdzilla Sama is as follows: Yes.

I've run across one busted thing.

I use an Android emulator called "Andy". It's useful for keeping stuff I use on my tablet and phone right at hand.

It seems that Win 10 didn't get along with something about the Oracle VMBox virtual machine software that Andy uses to run in emulation.

They already had a fix out. Fairly painless. It involved installing a newer version of VMBox with a custom option, and then reinstalling Andy.

Everything is back up and running.

Was Windows installed by the manufacturer? If so if you still have the certificate and/or the sticker saying it is a genuine windows (which should have the key on it) you can reinstall that version of windows, activate it with the key and then do the upgrade.

When you consider the literally billions of possible combinations of software and hardware that are the user base I am always amazed at how good MS are at upgrading the OS.

That's working just fine for me. (Just checked, 'cause I don't use that very often.)

I'm using Windows Live Mail. Is that what's giving you the problem?

I agree.

Of course it only takes one little flaw for the bashers to latch onto and start a Whine Campaign.

(Look how much mileage they got of of the Start Button thing. Sheesh.)

A couple of recent favourites from elsewhere:
"I hate it because I can't find Solitaire"
"After upgrading I noticed it had created a 20gb folder called 'windows.old'. I don't have 20gb to spare so I went back to Windows7".
