Why the Persistent Disassociation?

Before America pats itself on the back too hard, for being over racism in the eyes of the world:

He's half white, so we're only half over it. In fact, less than that, because he only got slightly more than 1/2 the votes. If half of McCain's votes were from racists, than we're only 29.37825% over racism, if my quick, in the head algebra was accurate.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed (my doctor says I don't have enough time left to read everything) but...

Given everything the same in this election, except this: Barrack is darker than Wesley Snipes.

McCain takes it?
That's my guess.

Same if he was 15.7296% less handsome.
Or John didn't have that swollen jaw.

Its pretty thin stuff. It was a 'just barely' deal.
We totally lucked out.

That would be great, except people of mixed races are often shunned by both sides. So the idea that he is only half black and thus would face less discrimination does not hold water.

Obama did not win the white vote, but he took a higher percentage than Gore or Kerry. A pretty good indication that at least in this case racism was overcome.

Gore and Kerry lacked charisma. They almost define lack of charisma. White liberals weren't racist to begin with.

How much of that depends on if the person can pass for a member of one of the races? Obama can certainly pass as black, so unlike some his interracial status does not come across in any interaction with him.

As soon as they get a whif that he's half black the manure begins to fly. I know. I have lived in an Afro-American neighborhood for the last thirty years. In fact, they don't even have to know, they only need to suspect. You see, there is this suspicion that persons like Obama secretly consider themselves white or superior to fulll blacks. That's where the tension comes from.

Do you have any references to support this assertion?
