Whilst gun control measures do not prevent determined criminals from sourcing guns, isn't it possible they are of benefit in preventing their use in domestic disputes, road rage incidents, accidents and crimes of passion? Having a gun, even under lock and key, is having access to something far more effective at silencing that pesky neighbour/nagging wife/ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend than a stick or a knife. A lot of gun deaths aren't carried out as a consequence of criminal activity (such as armed robbery). I'm sure a lot of otherwise very decent people could find themselves in a deeply emotional or distressing situation where they resort to the use of a gun. I agree there are many ways to kill yourself or others apart from using a gun, but a gun is very effective and fairly final. The issue is more about school massacres and workplace sieges rather than bank hold-ups.
