Why don't Atheists run amok?

If there's no god and there's no rules or consequences to life what does it matter what you do in life?

If good and bad are merely subjective terms why don't Atheists do whatever they want whenever they want?

Do Atheists live by morals and ethics they have inherited from Theists?

In case anyone doesn't already know, I'm an Atheist.

There are consequences. If you are a bad human being you will be treated very badly by humans around you (God not required).

We are social animals, and as such have a rich set of social instincts derived through natural selection just like other instincts. Those dealing with our treatment of others are called 'morality'

Humans like all social animals have evolved a gene that causes a desire to live in harmony with their fellow man. Ants in the same hill don't bite each other and piranas don't eat each other. Lions in the same prdie and wolves in a pack seldom attack each other. Its genetic.

A better question would be this one. Why do religious people run amok. They do it as often as atheists any day of the week.

i am prejudiced against death. i dont want to be dead, so i do not make others dead, most propaly others have the same prejudice against death like i have :D

I'm a radical atheist and I run amok all the time.

I've torn apart and destroyed 17 deities/gods/demiurges to date and I've enjoyed doing so.

The only reason that I haven't been held accountable is that the beasties that I demolished are imaginary.

Have to go now - I've got Gaia on the rack...

Why don't wolves kill each other until 1 wolf remains?

In fact according to statistics of theists in prisons compared to atheists they do it CONSIDERABLY MORE.

Some atheists run amok, though it's a small percentage. If they ever get into a position of real power it's absolutely disastrous, e.g. Stalin, Pol Pot...

Most atheists are rather soft though. In other words, they're only superficially atheistical (on the level of thought, theory and the like, rather than real gut morality and actual real world behaviour).

When it comes down to it, only the most fanatical kind of people allow themselves to be led other than by disinterested conscience. Disinterested conscience is inexplicable in an atheistic materialist Reality, so, in short, the vast majority of atheists live according to a theistic morality, even though many types you'd find at JREF would hate the idea.

The first half of the 20th Century was a great experiment in living true to atheist, materialistic morality, and much amok was run. Finally the fanatics were beaten back on Omaha beach and elsewhere.

I ran 12 moks tonight and I'm tired.

That being said, humans evolved to be social animals and it benefits us to cooperate rather than to kill one another, though there are all kinds of exceptions to that rule, or so the news tells me.

Because morality has nothing to do with religion.
Exactly - You don't need a god to have rules and consequences.

Atheists have common sense rules rules and consequences related to life.

Theists tend to have belief rules and consequences more related to death.

Take your pick . . .

Omaha beach? Isn't that where mostly christian America and her allies attacked mostly christian Germany?

Considering I'm pretty sure I'm alive right now, that's what I'll concern myself with for the time being. We'll cross the whole death bridge when we come to it.

No, that's where partially Christian America and her partially Christian allies attacked a German army led by a political administration inspired and largely fanaticised by materialistic social Darwinist ideas such as survival of the fittest, racial superiority/inferiority, idealisation of a master race, application of materialistic purely biological standards for judging the value of the human being..etc.. compared to that, most allies on D-Day were rather wonderfully Church of England types.

Because there are rules and consequences in life. We call them laws and prisons.
