RAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published Thursday that the al-Qaida terror network has infiltrated the Gaza Strip and West Bank, which could have dire consequences for the Middle East.

Abbas said in an interview with the London-based Al Hayat newspaper that he had not expected al-Qaida would succeed in setting up operations in the Palestinian areas.

"We have signs of an al-Qaida presence in the West Bank and Gaza," Abbas said, without elaborating. "We haven't yet reached the stage of capturing them."

Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Ahmed Abu el-Rish Brigades, the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades....and now the al-Qaida terror network. That is five different designated terror organizations - recognized as such by the EU, US Canada and Israel.

Way to go guys! That's five designated terror groups all working out of the West Bank and Gaza under the watchful eye of the Palestinian Authority.

A new record!

Damn. I had Black September, Hamas (they are really common, everyone has one), Red Brigade (they are getting sort of old), and a few Tamil Tigers.

This competitve Terrorist Collecting hobby is tough.

Has it been THAT long since ZN's last "omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil" thread?

Has it been THAT long since ZN's last "omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil" thread?

If simply noting that the place is filled with more terrorists than any other place in the world leads you to the inevitable conclusion that the message must be "omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil", what does that say about your perceptions?

You sure this isn't from The Onion? I mean, it's rare you see such low-hanging fruit.

Like what for instance? Violence?
Abbas said in an interview with the London-based Al Hayat newspaper that he had not expected al-Qaida would succeed in setting up operations in the Palestinian areas.
That's like saying he had not expected that damp piece of bread at the bottom of the drawer would get moldy after a month.

"We have signs of an al-Qaida presence in the West Bank and Gaza," Abbas said, without elaborating. "We haven't yet reached the stage of capturing them."
I don't believe the PA will "reach the stage of capturing" anyone from al Qaeda unless and until the Israelis dump the AQ's body on Abbas's doorstep, and maybe not even then.

Hmmmm...still searching but I can't seem to find where I posted :

"omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil"

...therefore:

"omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil"

...is a strawman created by you Cleon.

In typical Cleon fashion the rebuttal to five designated terror groups all working out of the West Bank and Gaza under the watchful eye of the Palestinian Authority is to run the:

"omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil"

...flag up the pole, and then to attack me with the strawman that you just created and ran up the pole.

Way to go hero!

I agree that its obvious that Abbas does not want to rid the place of these al-quaeda dudes....its so simple. There are none of them in Iraq anymore because we just wandered around one afternoon and arrested them all...didn't we?

Maybe it's a Machiavellian plan. Consider.
1. All known terrorist groups congregate in Gaza.
2. America invades Palestine. Captures terrorists and floods nation with financial aid to set up democratic (ie Republican) gummint.
3.Palestinians get rich, become capitalist fatcats and buy condos at Eilat.
4. Middle East Problem solved.

Define 'bad'

Isn't Abbas saying it's a bad thing that Al-qaeda is creating a presence there?

Compared to what? To the HAMAS? To AlAqsa Martyrs Brigades? To the Hexbollocks? (They're not working out of the occupied territories, but still a major player in the proximate region).

In any case, Abbas has pretty much relinquished the PA Security ops, such as they were, and HAMAS will be responsible for rounding up and jailing (!!!) any of these alQueda renegades.

Good luck to that.

  • Abbas said Thursday that he intends to transfer broad security powers to the future Hamas government, including the national defense branch, preventive security, the civilian police and civil defense.

The national defense branch, which consists of 25,000 policemen, is the largest branch and is defined as the Palestinian army. The other three are subject to the Palestinian Interior Ministry.

In an interview to Al-Jazeera television in Qatar earlier this week, Abbas said that the only security branch which would not be subjected to the government would be General Intelligence, headed by Tawfik A-Tirawi.

Lots of intrigue, for anyone who can keep a scorecard of the situation:
In recent weeks Abbas has transferred security authorities from the government to his own Presidential office. He appointed current Interior Minister General Nasser Yusuf as his deputy for security affairs and put head of preventive security Rashid Abu Shabak in charge of "internal security in the West Bank and Gaza."

Depends how you define "designated".

Algeria when the GIA was falling apart porbably does quite well in terms of terror groups. The DRC probably had a fair number as well.

Depends how you define "designated".
Designated means the EU, US, Canada and Israel keep lists of foreign terrorist organizations and designate such organizations as t-e-r-r-o-r-i-s-t organizations. In the West Bank and Gaza under the areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority you have approximately 4.6 million people and 5 designated & known terrorist organizations operating free from arrest. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that allowing 4 designated islamist terror organizations to run freely around Gaza and the West Bank and to have the fifth designated islamist terror organization ruling the Palestinian Authority is a clear and present danger to the peaceful resolution in the Mideast conflict.

That is why every internationally-brokered treaty the Palestinian Authority signed with Israel had the obligation for the Palestinian Authority to disarm and dismantle the terror groups. But instead of disarming and dismantling the terror groups they are increasing in numbers and now one terror group even runs the Palestinian Authority.

Unlike Cleon I do not "run interference" for the Palestinians by dropping strawmen such as:

Has it been THAT long since ZN's last "omg Palestinians are eeeeeevil" thread?

That type of "interference" is absolutely no different than if there was a thread about the entrenched insurgency in Iraq and Cleon rides up on his high horse and posts:

Has it been THAT long since ZN's last "omg Iraqis are eeeeeevil" thread?

Unlike Cleon I am willing to call a spade a spade and refuse to deny that the Palestinians have more designated terror organizations operating amongst their tiny population than any other group on earth.

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Palestinian militants fired four rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip, prompting a response by Israeli artillery, military sources said. Two rockets struck a strategic industrial zone south of the Mediterranean city of Ashkelon...

MOSCOW - Hamas' political leader on Friday rejected any discussion about the militant group's refusal to recognize Israel, dealing a setback to Moscow's efforts to persuade it to soften its stance.

"The issue of recognition (of Israel) is a decided issue," said Hamas' exiled political leader, Khaled Mashaal, upon arrival in Moscow for talks with Russian officials. "We don't intend to recognize Israel."

CAIRO (Reuters) - Palestinian leaders still suspect Yasser Arafat died of poisoning, President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published on Friday.

"Question marks have been raised about Israel. But I cannot accuse it before I am certain and have proof," he said.

Rockets landing inside Israel daily, a Palestinian Authority run by a bunch of islamist terrorists who won't even recognize Israel and the Prime Minister still floating woo woo conspiracy theories blaming Israel for poisoning Arafat. Just another day in Palestine.

[edited to add]

p.s.
Instead of perpetuating woo woo conspiracy theories about Israel poisoning Arafat to rehabilitate that monster why don't you expend some of that energy and find Arafat's stolen billions Abbas? If you really wanna do something good and have a positive legacy find the international aid billions that were stolen by Arafat.

who kills more bystanders? Palestinians? British? Americans? Australians? I guess it depends on them having sound and moral reasons for killing innocent people eh?

Palestinians are in the way of destiny....silly people.

The funny part is that I have ZN on ignore, and didn't even read the OP before making my reply. Odd, the way that seems to have played out. You might even call it predictable.
