the fascinating thing is....the fascist countries (accept Germany of course) seemed to be the ones that fought the deportation and extermination of Jews the most. Just look at how Italy and Romania fought the Nazis tooth and nail when it came to deporting their Jews. The Jewish population of Romania actually INCREASED after WW2!!!

I'd venture to guess that the Jews of Iaşi and those who were sent to Bogdanovka would strongly disagree with you. Were they alive, that is. Yes, the axis powers allied to Germany were a little more reluctant to deport and exterminate all their Jews than Germany and its puppet states were (duh). But they most certainly did not fight "tooth and nail" for them. Antonescu alone was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Jews (and thousands of Roma) throughout the Holocaust.

As Slayhamlet already noted, you're wrong about Romania; Antonescu was quite eager to deport the Romanian Jews, partly to gain Hitler's favor.

You're right though about Italy; and the same holds for Hungary. In both countries Jews were only deported after the fascist regime fell and power was taken over by the German military.

The reason for this "paradox" is simple. These fascist regimes were not anti-semitic: anti-semitism is not a property of fascism in general, only of Nazism. Why would Hitler invade these countries as long as they delivered troops to his cause (and there were enough Jews in the rest of Europe to exterminate). He was not that stupid. Whereas in the conquered countries, he instituted a Nazi-friendly civilian administration which would do his bidding, aided by Nazi military and police.

Don't tell me that someone is taking FreeRomanian seriously?

Antonescu was a Romanian leader in the wonderful tradition established by Vlad the Impaler.
