Look at your hands. Count the fingers on your left hand, one-by-one, backwards. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6. Now, you know that your right hand has 5 fingers. 6 + 5 = 11! Whoa!
Where is the dollar ?
We can show where the dollar goes through algebra,
Let a = the money they started with and
b = the money they ended with
We know they ended with $1 less so
a=b+1
If we multiply each side by (a-b)
(a-b)a = (a-b)(b+1)
Expanding out
a2 - ab = ab + a - b2 – b
Take a from each side
a2 - ab -a = ab + a -a - b2 – b
which can be rewritten as
a(a - b - 1) = b(a - b - 1)
divide each side by (a-b-1) and we are left with
a=b
In other words they started and ended with the same amount so the money didn't go anywhere
