Vegans Sentenced in Baby's Death

May 09,2007 | ATLANTA -- A vegan couple was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple was found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

I applauded that result when I heard about it the other day. You are allowed to cause yourself harm as a result of your stupidity, but you cannot harm others by forcing your stupidity upon them.

Dont' get me wrong. We're not doomed because they were convicted...we're doomed because evolution still allows for these mutations.
 
I was pretty sure "Whe" wasn't an English word, so I had to check in to see whether you meant to type "Why morons breed," "When morons breed," or "We morons breed."

ETA: We're not doomed as spices. I have sage and rosemary growing in my back yard. When the killer asteroid comes, you can all come over to my house to get all the spices you need.

At anyrate, morons breed because sex is pleasurable; that should answer the question.
 
But in this case their own stupidity reduced their reproductive fitness to zero.
 
What a sad story, actually. I wonder what kind of food they will get in prison?

If you think hard about it, like I did for the past 2 hours, there's only one possible option, "When morons breed".

"Why morons breed" can't be a typo, the Y is not close enough to the E on the keyboard.

"We morons breed" is impossible, because we are the smart ones, right?

I guess I should become a vegan...

On the up side...these parents are going to find eating in prision difficult...if they persist in their veganism.

Oh, I think they'll be fine. They can always get "The Loaf." That's what John Lee Malvo - the teenage half of the sniper team that was terrorizing the DC area a few years ago - gets.
120 slices of wheat bread
25 cups grated nondairy cheese
10 cups raisins
4 cups vegetable oil
15 cups grated carrots
15 cups well-drained spinach
60 cups vegetarian beans
8 cups tomato puree
15 cups nondairy powdered milk
12 cups instant potatoes
1 pound brown sugar
1 cup white sugar

1. Mix.
2. Bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes.

Makes 60 servings.

I loved this part:

Cheerfully biting into the loaf, the sheriff chewed for a long, long time before observing to the gathered reporters: "I knew there were going to be a lot of things I had to do in this job that wouldn't be enjoyable. … eating The Loaf in front of witnesses wasn't one of them."

Does vegans reject breastfeeding? Obviously these two did, but i cant imagine that is the rule...

Certainly not.

Maybe she couldn't breastfeed? Many women can't.

As an aside, every carton of soy milk I've ever seen (and I'm vegan myself, so I see a lot!) has "Not suitable as a milk source for children under 6 months" or something similar. Furthermore, most vegans are very aware of nutrition and diet, probably moreso than omnivores - it's important for us to be very concious of what we eat, so we tend to take more notice.

This is very, very far from representative of vegans or veganism.
 
This is also enormously stupid, as there are soy (vegan-compatible) baby formulas out there. My daughter had to be on one, because she literally could not digest animal proteins in any milk-based products.

Being a vegan is fine - these two, though, should be facing the death penalty for willful ignorance.
