What the hell?

Okay, I didn't have a ton of time but I wanted to whip up a nice visual aid to help anyone who didn't understand this whole "gay or not gay" thing. Here's a quickie Venn diagram that I hope might clear up any misunderstandings:

So far as the presenters go, I can only think of the SciAM editor, and the funny part was how the person who wrote him added "gay" as an insult at the end. The insult itself was lame, but the context was funny.

With all due respect, how you "mean" something isn't really the way one determines whether a phrase or comment is insulting, offensive, or homophobic. You're using the accusation of someone being gay as a joke; that, in itself, is insensitive. And I'd expect more from a group of enlightened critical thinkers such as yourselves.

Would you all be so cavalier about accusing him of being Black? I bet not. I just wish people were as aware of how these things affect many of us who are gay...or that you cared.

Oh, but how something is meant DOES matter.

You don't know the history of the joke... and wouldn't care anyway, you seem bent on being insulted. All I can say is that is originated between 2 friends (one of whom IS gay), and is certainly not mean spirited. We can understand how, from the outside, it might seem friendly, so we tried to explain.

Unfortunately, you're making judgements without sufficient data, and then getting angry about it, and condemning us. That's a mistake.

but the joke is that he constantly flirts with us gay guys, while loudly proclaiming (truthfully) how not-gay he is.
 
Actually he flirts with everyone, regardless of their sex or sexuality.

For what it's worth, I would totally find it just as funny if we were claiming that Tobias was black.

And I wasn't even in on the original joke :)
 
Tobias was the first JREF person I met on the Thursday morning - just about the time I was starting to wonder if the whole thing was a CT-esque hoax , as there seemed to be no mention of TAM anywhere in the Riviera.
I didn't know what straight Danish autists are supposed to look like, but a highly gregarious wookie wasn't quite what I had in mind.

Mind you , I was wrong about nearly everybody. I expected Claus to be more like Toby- shield, battleaxe, horned helmet, spam. Your classic Viking. But let's face it- you can't see him leaping out of the longship, axe in hand, raping nuns, slaying monks, pillaging and looting...
 
I just remember Toby running down the hallway, saying something like he could "Die now and be happy" because Penn touched his... winky area. He didn't say winky, but you know what he means.

When I touched his winky area he did not proclaim that he could now die happy (or some such over the top nonsense).

I don't know, maybe the rest of you straight guys should have Penn touch you there, and see what happens?

All I know is Toby is a blast, and while I'm not sure what he is, his hair is really pretty.

Oh and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Antiquehunters shirts. I covet them. Mind you, I have one of Geek Goddess shirts, and I have already worn it. It's very nice, but not too warm!!! Lots of compliments.

But now, I want one of Antiquehunters shirts. He is so hot. But then all the hot ones are gay. So maybe Toby isn't gay?
