What forthcoming software apps are you most looking forward to?

Seconded. If it's one tenth as cool as it looks then I'll never leave my computer again.

Wikipedia says final development costs are expected to be in excess of 20 million bucks. I wonder if that's gonna be some kind of record.

I too await this thing called 'Spore.'

However, I worry that Wright is attempting to do too much by having basically 6 games in 1, where each game (which I think they call a 'phase') has different mechanics from the rest.

(note: these include released and unreleased titles)

Personal: Spore, Bioshock, Guitar Heros II for 360
Professional: Oracle 10g, TOAD v10, eight-core procs (okay, that's not a software app, but I really really really want it for my servers (even though they are currently running dual quad cores))

It's actually down to 4.5 phases. They've dropped the underwater phase and made the tidepool phase optional.

Phase 1 (Tidepool) is an optional tutorial that has no affect on your critter
Phase 2 (Creature) is where you build your critter from a slug to a intelligent thing suitable for galactic domination.
Phase 3 (Tribe) is like sim city where you act as a group rather than idividual animal.
Phase 4 (World) is like civilization where you try to beat out other tribes to rule the world.
Phase 5 (Space) is the free form game where you visit any of the several millions stars and mess with who or what you find there.

Still, it's too ambitious, as I suspect that each phase can stand on its own as a rich game. Better to start small, build incrementally and avoid the inevitable compromises of a mega-project. Will I play regardless? Of course!

Has it been announced which OSs Spore will support? With my luck, it won't be supported on XP...

According to Amazon.com, it looks like Spore will run on XP.
And, with good reason: I reckon more Windows PCs are still going to run XP than Vista, when it comes out.

Yes, it is ambitious, but at least they are not rushing it out the door. They are taking their sweet time polishing the whole thing.

Spore.
then:
Crysis.
UT3.
I will have to get a new graphics card for those. I had to upgrade my graphics card for the original Farcry.

It's already 18 months passed the original due date.

I'd rather wait and get something that actually works without having to load 400 patches.

I'd rather have seen them release a solid game built around the Tidepool phase some months ago. Then release sequels (or whatever they want to call them) each built on subsequent phases as they are finished. No patching necessary. No waiting necessary.

I'm waiting til I have the money for the Waves L3-16. That thing is PIMP!!!!!
