Split Thread Watergate

It's been an awfully long time, but I did read the White House transcripts when the book came out. I heard a lot of the hearings on the radio, as I was, at that time, reroofing my house, and spent a lot of time on the roof, listening to the radio. It was quite a show, of which I remember very little, though I do recall being amused by Sam Ervin, who couched his relentlessness in a down-home demeanor. "Now I'm just an ol' country lawyer, but...." meant watch out! That, and poor Lowell Weicker, a nice preppie Main Street Republican, reacting with what seems to have been genuine shock to the corruption around him like a debutante goosed at the ball. "Republicans don't do that!"

Can anyone recommend a good book(s) on Watergate? Documentary maybe, whatever seems accurate, if there is such a thing.
....

You're kidding, right? "All the President's Men" is Woodward and Bernstein's best-selling account of their investigation and summary of their findings. It was made into a legendary movie (not a documentary, but mostly fact-based) starring Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Robards and other big names. Their follow-up, "The Final Days," built on the first book with more information.

Get back to us if you've never heard of Woodward and Bernstein.

Best I ever read was Fred Emery, "Watergate". He was the writer for a multi-part series (I think on the BBC) for an audience that may not have wallowed in the details like the previous generation did. I think it's from a couple of decades ago, though. I will bow to anyone who knows of a better volume that's more recent. I don't have my copy - it's back in NYC.

All The President's Men is a great book, but it reads like Robert Ludlum. It's great... but it's a cops-and-robbers meets "caper" movie. It's definitely lacking in historical perspective and background. Written so close to the events they didn't have the luxury of later interviews with some of the perps (er,... I mean "principals").

That BBC series was the ultimate documentation of the whole sorry saga - for years I have tried to buy it, but last time I checked it was still only available on VHS  Thanks for the recommendation, I will try and locate "Watergate" the book.

For newbies (I lived through it) - I would definitely start with "All the President's men", followed by " The Final Days".

"Watergate" is on its way from Amazon :)
