OK on the UFO site....this question came up. It sounds like something man made (of course!) but what exactly? Pronto help would be very welcome!

here is it...

It was about the size of a blimp. pretty close to the ground, about the height a blimp would travel. It was bright. It radiated a whitish, somewhat blue color and it was a ovalish, fat-disk shape. It almost seemed like it illuminated the immediate area around it as well. It reminded me of a very bright glow stick. There were no "lights" shining down or onto it or anything else... the entire surface of the object was emitting a soft, but strong, glowing light.

I thought it maybe just a blimp lit up like a lantern, but it wasn't. There were no letters or signs... the light was too bright for them to be visible anyway. Plus it wasn't a fat blimp shape. It was a bit more elongated and skinnier, like a disk, but not so flat. There was no soil outline of the object. The light was too bright to see that.

It moved smooth and straight like a blimp would but faster. it traveled at a steady speed maybe 30-40 mph then sped up to about 60-70 mph.

Once the distance between us and it increased we could see the entire thing clearly. The color was more white now and then we defiantly seen a red light on top of the object and then another red light on bottom.

The 'HB50 Hyperblimp' is packed with hi-tech military technology to
silently hunt for criminals and monitor crime scenes in Ogden, Utah.

Measuring 54ft by 4ft, the helium-filled airship can stay aloft for
seven hours, has a top speed of 40mph and can float up to 400ft.

Situations like this are precisely why the JREF Forums retains the services of a world-class professional blimpologist to tackle any sudden blimp-related crises that might arise.

However our dirigible issues are left untended as always

An earlier prototype of this craft got loose in 2007 and floated around downtown Salt Lake City for a while, prompting a lot of UFO reports. I saw it on my way to work, hovering over the city courthouse. Even though it was obviously a man-made blimp it was fun to watch some people's reactions.

hahaha!
thanks, I kept thinking "it's a blimp dude"

sigh...or ALIENS (which is what they ALWAYS want me to say)

What sounds like a description of internal lighting seems a bit counter-intuitive for a surveillance blimp, but it's not beyond the bounds of possibility.

The other thing that doesn't seem quite right are the top and bottom red lights, although they may have been the port nav lights. An operational airship would normally carry strobe-type anticollision beacons top and bottom.

Heard aboard alien spacecraft:

"In range, Sir!"
"Excellent, deploy the surveillance blimp!"
:D

Occam's Razor suggests that if it looks like an alien spacecraft, it is an alien spacecraft. No other possible alternative makes sense.

Unless it is swamp gas.

Did I miss a location, time of day, and direction of observation in there? Those are always important in looking at UFO reports. As always, this reports says a lot about what the witness thinks they saw but little details about what was actually seen. The devil is ALWAYS in the details and until such details can be acquired, no identification attempt can seriously be made.

That being said, it COULD have been a blimp...or something else (and I don't mean the OMG ALIENS! answer - possibly a plane or chinese lantern).

Kitty, was this sighting in New England? If so, could it be the Hood blimp? It's lit from inside and is white(ish). I know this doesn't match some of the details you gave but maybe it's close enough (??)

See day and night images at http://www.redsoxblimp.com/ (Sorry no images, I'm unsure on rules 4 and 5).

ferd
