UFO help needed!

or go see the UFO thread for others

Yes, let's keep all of those things in the existing moderated thread where they belong. We don't need to bring the blimp discussion here when it's already going on elsewhere.

How can knowledge advance with stuff like that?

With evidence. Right now, there's no evidence for extra-terrestrial craft visiting us. There are some unexplained sightings of things in the sky. Many of those sightings have been determined to be things like reflections, hoaxes, aircraft, trash, etc. None have been confirmed to be anything paranormal.

If one of those things leaves behind something that provides actual evidence - say, an alien body or a ray gun or even the craft itself - then we can use that extraordinary evidence to start making actual claims about what the UFOs might be in the same way we have for the ones that turned out to be something mundane.

At that point, we would be able to say "Hey, this one that turned out to be a bioluminescent pterodactyl from the future had certain characteristics. Do any unexplained UFO sightings seem to match that?" And maybe some do, and this becomes a possible explanation for those cases. There will be other cases that don't match, and we still won't know if those are aliens or helicopters or hoaxes. Finding that pterodactyl won't be proof for aliens though, so it will still make sense to assume that "aliens" isn't the answer for the remaining cases unless some evidence of aliens shows up.

It's been a bit since I've posted one of my "ask an expert" questions on UFOs here. I'm posting this one as it comes from someone that does NOT think the 2 experiences are of alien crafts. We have a skeptic that has seen 2 really peculiar things.

I'm guessing this all took place in Canada.

Let's help out a fellow "skeptic" with some good suggestions of what's going on in the skies above his cabin!

here's the important part of his question...

that said I have seen two different Ufo's at my cabin. Once alone and once both a friend and I watched the UFO while having a cigar and Scotch. It was three red lights. In the same pattern and varying in intensity. I watch the night sky often and know the difference between an airplane and satellite. This occurred over a large lake. Would it be possible to be the afterburners from airplanes? (even thought here was no sound)

My second sighting was in the same location. A star just appeared and zipped around the sky super fast, disappearing and reappearing. This lasted about the same amount of time 1 minute or so.

thanks

There is insufficient data in this post to make any sort of accurate guess at what was seen, but the lights "zipping around" might be something worth following up on. I'd say that if you are a skeptic already and you weren't sure that what you saw wasn't natural or manmade it isn't worth worrying about. Trust me, when you do see a real UFO, it's pretty obvious they aren't "one of ours", and you wouldn't be asking us if you saw one, you'd be telling us you saw one.

I missed this thread the first time around.
I've just gone around to your site really and have bookmarked it.
One of my colleagues really and truly believes they've been abducted and I'm hoping that having them go to your site and have a read will help them.

When one sees a UFO, the only thing that's obvious is that it's unidentified, and even the 'flying' and 'object' parts are open to queston.

To acknowledge something as 'unidentified' and yet boldly assert that it has some other-worldly origin is absurdly self-contradictory.

You appear, like Rramjet, to be trying to usurp the true meaning of 'UFO' and replace it with a variant of 'flying saucer' at the same time as proclaiming that you don't believe in flying saucers.

I'll bet it works just as well for you.

I know that's true, you know that's true - but unfortunately it is only true for those who have actally seen a genuine UFO. Once you have seen a genuine UFO, then the truths in your statements there are inescapable - but if you have not seen one ...all bets are off because also unfortunately, the world is undeniably full of whackos - and based on that fact it is very easy for the sceptic to dismiss the whole thing with the wave of a hand - "Oh, you must be a whacko too." So unfortunately the truth in your statements will never be accepted by those sceptics who have never seen a genuine UFO - but of course if they had, they would no longer be sceptical about it...LOL.

WTF is a "genuine UFO"?

Something I can't tell what it is?

Rramjet seems either totally unable to get his head around the fact that skeptics see just as many UFOs as the credulous or it just appears that way because he's being so disingenuous about the matter.

For ease of understanding, I find it useful to simply substitute "flying saucer" wherever Rramjet uses "UFO", since that's obvously what he means.

The real challenge is in getting him to explain who he thinks is driving these "genuine UFOs" around.

Excuse me but can I join your little club or should you two get a room?

I’ve seen a “genuine” UFO… I genuinely still don’t know WTF it was but it sure looked like a “flying saucer” to me but of course, as always, I could be wrong.

Is that not a genuine UFO and by “genuine UFO” you mean definitely without a doubt a genuine alien spaceship not a classic “flying saucer”?

If so, I must admit I didn’t see any aliens (in or outside of it or worse) so perhaps your guy’s UFO (I assume you two saw the exact same thing) was more genuine than mine?

Bummer, so I don’t make the same mistake again, what do the aliens and their spaceship look like and what was it I saw?

Or is that TOP SECRET or something?

No way, José. You just need to get hold of one of these:

I saw something very similar about a year ago. I posted is somewhere on here. Myself and two other people confirmed a light like a star zipping around at amazing speed and crazy course changes. It would disappear and then reappear somewhere else all together. We watched it for at least 3 minutes before we realized it was actual light reflecting off the underside of a not so distant bat. Nearby buildings and lighting completely threw off our perspective but there was a minute I really thought I was seeing something out of this world.

Especially over water I bet you were seeing light reflecting off a flying creature catching bugs.

Reading the quote I was thinking "Moth!" before I even looked at your response.
