Trump's Second Term

On the Epstein front, looks like there's more evidence that Trump's DoJ lied about his death.

Epstein Files Reveal Prosecutors’ Announcement Dated Before His Death
The file dump includes multiple draft statements from federal prosecutors about the sex trafficker’s death, one of them dated the day before Epstein died.

Based on that, at least, it's mildly plausible that it was a typo/accidental misdating. Still remarkably suspicious in a case that was already extremely suspicious and where Trump and many of those that he surrounds himself with are some of the primary people who would want to silence Epstein. Added to that...

Who entered Epstein's jail tier the night of his death? Newly released video logs appear to contradict official accounts.

Looks like they've been caught in another lie. Again, this isn't proof of anyone in particular's guilt or confirmation of specific CTs, but as noted, the case was already extremely suspicious and Trump and many of those that he surrounds himself with are some of the primary people who would want to silence Epstein.

BRENNAN: Do you think the president needs to apologize for the video?

REP. TONY GONZALES: It's up to the president. There's no room in the country for racism, antisemitism, socialism --all the isms need to go. What no one is talking about is the video was about election integrity

Except "cronyism:, of course. That's essential to the operation of the current administration.

People also keep leaving out the context. That clip wasn’t even the purpose of the video — it was part of a screen recording about election issues. But that didn’t stop people from rushing to label him something I know, from my own experience, he is not...
Let me see: if the racist content is not the main content of the video, then there is no racist material in the video …

There is an interesting article in the weekend FT 'Normalisation of deviancy'. Essentially the slippery slope, Trump may be the president who has monetised the presidency most, and the degree to which friends and family have been able to exploit the presidency for money may be greater than previous presidencies, but it didn't start with 47. The Biden presidency allowed Hunter Biden to profit in a way previous presidencies never would have been permitted to. Bush junior and the war on terror opened the way to drones as agents of extra judicial and extra territorial execution, but Obama increased the use; Trump merely extended the project to criminal enforcement. No President since Bush has ended GITMO and the holding of political enemies without trial, Trump in his use of ICE and extraditing to foreign prisons is merely continuing with this policy.

What the US needs is a president who can reset things (and this would need help from congress). Minimise the ability to govern by executive orders, close GITMO, incorporate human rights in to the US constitution. Introduce rules to prevent the presidency being a for profit institution.

And fascism.
The idealized form of conservatism is long gone already, though.

The latter, especially. To add a bit more perspective there, though, Obama did try to end GITMO and Republicans in Congress directly blocked him from doing so. There certainly is a real issue when it comes to Democrats not fixing things or changing course enough, but the Republicans are the main drivers of the corruption of nigh everything good and have been for a long time, now.

Such a person would be filtered out by the entrenched system long before they ever reached any levers of power.

And what you, you abject moron (not you, Andy) are not talking about is the fact that if the video was about election integrity, the inclusion of a racist image does not just disappear. It makes it worse! Adding an insult that is gratuitous and irrelevant deprives it of even the last shred of excuse for accidental inclusion. Burying it in a post about something else does not camouflage it. Nor does appending a list of other wrongs make it more right.

Imagine being so cowed that you give up your basic integrity in service of pathetic sycophancy . . . wait a minute, it's been that way for just about ever. Never mind.

Another observation is that a number of Trump loyalists are upset that critics only focus on the last 5 seconds of the video instead of all the "serious" stuff (:sdl:). But then the question comes up: why did they add the 5 seconds of racism if it has no relation to the message.

Our answer is of course that their racism cannot be separated from their serious stuff, and they know it!

I am not very knowledgeable on US politics, so thank you for the correction.

Also, the claim it was just riffing on the Lion King is a bit difficult if there aren't chimps in that situation.

Why did the silly nonsense have to "riff on the Lion King" at all in the first place? It's a children's musical movie! With a simple, easily digestible storyline and basic good/evil morals. I would venture to suggest it is because a Disney movie for six-year-olds is the intellectual and moral level of both the producers and the intended audience, i.e. the Orange Oaf. They are ignorant children, and Donny wants to be the schoolyard bully. And even then, the makers of the video failed abjectly to comprehend the "uplifting" storyline altogether. They just wanted to make it a bully narrative.

Understandable. A lot of Americans across the political spectrum aren't actually very knowledgeable about US politics, either, if it helps at all. There are a lot of complications, after all, and it's easy to miss the forest for the trees, especially when there are a bunch of voices loudly telling us to focus on one tree or other. Republicans aren't only bad and Democrats aren't only good, by a long shot, but big picture, Republicans have been the driving force behind just about everything corrupting the US since the Republicans' Southern Strategy ran its course, bringing the racist vote into a position of notable power over the Republican Party, and when they united with the corrupt, hateful right-wing religious leaders/fraudsters, that made it all the worse. They already had the rich "masters" who desired to be able to stomp all over a huge permanent underclass and be generally above the law running the show before then. Naturally, with those groups (and more) combined, what they do is usually not pretty. It's certainly not always bad by a long shot and not all of the bad groups are bad in the same ways, but that's a really, really low bar.
