Ehh... The autopen thing was never sincere in the first place and pretty much everyone should have known that. Rather, it was almost certainly a quiet admission that the Trump Administration relies heavily upon the use of autopen, but did the usual "thief loudly accusing the victim of being a thief to steal more from the victim and trick the ignorant passersby" routine that people like that love to do so much. As for the "armor?" Truth, honor, justice, morals, or realistic assessments just aren't why many of his supporters supported him, after all.

I went to the same barber for decades, from the first haircut I remember getting until the barber passed away. It was a little local barber shop straight out of "The Andy Griffith Show", with a bunch of chairs where a group of elderly men would sit and talk all the time. I distinctly remember a racist conversation in which they talked about rounding up all the black men in the country and shipping them off to an island somewhere (with mention of providing them watermelons and blowup dolls). Note, just the men would leave. The women would be allowed to stay, for some reason that I just can't for the life of me figure out.
(That last bit was sarcasm, in case you couldn't tell.)

He was asked about one of the criminals he had just pardoned. He didn't know who it was, what he was pardoning etc. As we say every accusation is a confession.

I think you're right. He doesn't much care what race anyone is. If someone toes the line and strokes his ego, they're okay. Anyone who defies or annoys him has to be attacked as viciously as possible and racist insults are just as good as any other abuse. It's nothing personal. He just needs to destroy you and it's one weapon which came to hand.

He's a lifelong racist, employing people in jobs based on outdated racist ideologies, eg only having jews for accountants or only employing black people in menial jobs.

Plus there's the whole Central Park Five thing where he believed them guilty only on the colour of their skins.

On the other hand he's good in reading the room .. and since his base is racist .. he can pander to it.

He's defintely racist, the black not-mes are much further down the ladder. But serious female jounalists are on the lowest rung, and I don't think he's very racist about them; they're all piggies, bleeding out of their wherevers.
 
Fred Trump is notorious for being a racist, from his housing practices to his arrest at a Klan rally.
I haven't dived into Trump's psychological profile, but his relationship with his dad by all accounts has molded him into the monster he is today. And we can see how his sons suck up to him even though he is incapable of loving them. So it stands to reason that Trump inherited his father's racism.
