Trump's Second Term

Yahoo:
First lady Melania Trump will host a private White House screening on Saturday of a new film documenting her life in the 20 days leading up to President ‌Donald Trump’s second inauguration, an adviser said.
FB posts under that
Trump will be making his whole cabinet watch this. He has already handed out scripts for them to read afterwards to complement the work.
Word on the street was that it was going to be screened at The Trump/Kennedy Center but she pulled out from that. Lol

How fascinating! Watch her pick out nail polish. Then goes to get her hair done. Then buys some clothing. Then tries on some more clothing. Then gets nail polish color changed. Then eats some fruit for lunch. I hope there's a sequel!

I wonder if it will be a plumber, cop or pizza delivery guy showing up at the door. Hey maybe it will be all three.
That's usually have these “ films” go.

Ehh. I'm going to disagree a bit here. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the Laffer curve as a concept. It's just that it's been hideously misused/abused by those with no interest in putting things at the highest point. Something like a 70% tax rate is often supposedly counted as the top of the curve, in other words, not the ever decreasing rate for the already rich and wealthy that the Republican party keeps pushing. Going by the Laffer Curve, they're rather pointedly decreasing government revenues and ignoring context in their propaganda as they try to claim that up is down and down is up, yet again.

Alternately said, more taxes total by lowering the tax rate is entirely reasonable, if taxes are bonecrushingly high. Taxes weren't and haven't been at anywhere close to that level all along, though. One could try to raise the very limited exception of that 90% on the highest tax bracket long ago, but total tax rate even for them was less than that and that group was already a group where the general nature of Laffer curve's applies badly from the start, given that selected groups of extreme outliers on a bell curve or a different bell curve (depending on the specific point raised) aren't well described by a general observation.
There is a huge problem with the Laffer curve, he assumed all monies taken in tax disappeared into the ether without doing anything.

Again Laffer's curve was based on his prejudices, not on the evidence. Laffer felt that rich people shouldn't be taxed so he invented a curve to "prove" rich people shouldn't be taxed.

Welker: DOJ is now 37 days past the deadline. Less than 1% of the Epstein files have been released.

Blanche: We will not rush that process.
We will not risk victim information being released, and I would hope that Congress doesn’t want us to do that
I guess Trump is a victim now, like all those poor ICE agents who have been attacked by terrorists armed with whistles and phones.

KARL: Why is Donald Trump threatening Canada with another trade war?

BESSENT: We can't let Canada become an opening that the Chinese pour their cheap goods into the US. I'm not sure what Prime Minister Carney is doing here other than virtue signal to his globalist friends at Davos

Good grief Bessent is an imbecile.

18 months ago they strong-armed Canada into the 100% chinese ev tariff, to which China retaliated with tariffs on Canada's canola, pork and seafood. All this deal does is allow a very limited number of chinese evs into the country (representing <5% of auto sales) in return for them lowering tariffs on our products. Its basically just getting us back to where we were 18 months ago before the US dragged us into the middle of their BS. This deal is estimated to bring China's share of Canadian trade from 4% to 5%. Its not exactly a world-altering deal.

They act like there will be chinese military bases on the border.

Chinese evs are already available in Mexico so its not like that is a real concern either.

The bottom line is a middle economy like Canada can't fight both the US and China at once. And right now, China is the far more reliable option while the US seems to be circling the bowl and about to go down.

According to this article from the economist, Canada has already gamed out US invasion scenarios. Apparently the government is also looking into creating a civilian defence force. I will be first in line to sign up and I promise I will take my last breath as a Canadian.

Canada’s armed forces are planning for threats from America

We've seen the encouragement of provincial separation egged on by the most extreme MAGA influencers and now even Bessent has put in his 2 cents on the matter. Its a talking point for the regime now, there will be more of this coming. There is evidence emerging that they are materially supporting separatist movements in Alberta and Quebec and running influence campaigns to try and destabilize our federation. I have noticed a LOT of negative videos about Canada in my youtube suggestions lately, I'm not sure if its part of that but there certainly seems to be a lot of them.

Very rocky times are ahead for this country. One could argue we are already at war. I hope Europe listened to Carney's speech at Davos. And I hope they learned from this past week's events regarding Greenland. You can stand up to Trump. He is all talk. It may hurt a bit but this administration must be brought to heel or the world is in for a very dark time.

...

There are plenty of huge problems with Laffer and his theories, yes. However, the Laffer curve is a specific thing. Again, it is literally a basic illustration of a trivially obvious truth. The problem with the Laffer curve, specifically, is how it's been misused, not with the concept invoked with the Laffer curve.

To poke back at the small example that I mentioned not long ago, attacking the Laffer curve is akin to attacking "more CO2 helps plants grow." That is quite true, as far as it goes and trying to argue against that invites mockery and hurts any argument that you may try to make, no matter how correct your larger stance may be. Why give those who actually need any convincing such a freebie defense?

Because it is missing the point so entirely and in the process giving people the excuse to focus on taxation instead of the actual issues.
Minmaximg the tax rate is the last thing we need to do after having solved creating sufficient competition, transparency, labor rights and safety, environmental protection, etc.etc.
The Laffer curve provides the excuse to ignore all those much more relevant issues.

It absolutely deserves mockery.
