I remember similar stories about Swedish submarines with their new sterling engines. They apparently unnerved the Americans so much they decided to lease a couple of the subs so they could study them.

As I posted previously, stories like this about exercises are always ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊.

aI spent years on Leander Class AS Frigates in the 80s. We exercised against subs defending flotillas and task forces as part of the AS screen.
We always got them but of it would upset the flow of the exercise it was never counted. The sub had to get it's kill.
