It's "bated". Short for "abated", meaning a pause in the breathing. Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice. The play by him, not that Shakespeare was himself a merchant of Venice. But I guess he could have been, if he had relocated there and started merchandizing. Action figures from his plays? The Hamlet Fun Time Play Set! Lady MacBeth hand cleanser! Othello cellos! My remarks, stupid though they are, are far more sensible than anything Trump's said in months.

1) Boko Haram and its offshoots were more active in 2017-2020 than they are now. Why didn't Trump deal with them back then?
2) The Nigerian army, with occasional help from the armies of neighboring countries, has been trying to get rid of Boko Haram and its offshoots for years. The US can't just send in a couple of Ranger battalions for a few months and eliminate them.
3) So far, no one has produced any evidence that Christians are being preferentially targeted. What's left of Boko Haram and its offshoots mainly operate in northeastern Nigeria, which is mostly Muslim. Are we to infer that Trump doesn't consider the deaths of Muslims to be important?

My theory is that one of the oligarch wannabes around Trump recently learned that Nigeria has oil.


eta: actually, scratch that. My theory is that Russia tipped someone/s in Trump's orbit to start making threats to Nigeria in the hopes of ruffling the energy market to win back some trade for Russia, or at least spike the oil prices to their advantage.

eta2: Could that be why Trump is lashing out on Venezuela, too? Huh.
