There was a return to work scheme run by the Irish government* after the 2008 crash which quickly got the moniker Scambridge because of job postings like a Chinese restaurant wanting servers who would gain the valuable skill of walking. I was in a similarly scammy position for a while with a laughably ran translation company where the owner didn't know what he was doing and was too lazy to learn.

*It was a €50 a week top up on your very minimal dole of €180 at the time (less if under 25), all paid for by the state, for a 40 hour week which should have paid twice that at least (minimum wage).

I was banned from Tesco's Facebook page for taking them to task for planning to use workfare staff to stack shelves and such when that scheme was attempting to take off. So did a lot of other people. We formed our own page which was much more fun.

I think these schemes could help people back into work, if they were done properly, but they always seem to be virtual slavery to provide corporate welfare. The jobs should be relevant to the person, shouldn't be a cheaper option than employing someone for the company and the person doing it should be significantly better off for doing it. Part of getting someone into work/back into work is making them feel it's worth working. Of course one of the problems at the moment is that a lot of jobs aren't worth doing as the pay is so poor compared to the cost of living.

After all this tariff crap, I find myself wondering something simple, but oh so indicative of how incredibly ****** up all this is.

Given a scenario where Putin wanted vengeance for the sanctions against Russia and chose to push for (his pet) Trump to impose tariffs all over to damage the US in much the same ways as those sanctions have damaged Russia as a whole, what would be meaningfully different from what's been happening, given Trump's nature and the others that he's beholden to?
