Very much this. The UK media space is full of claims about asylum seekers in Five Star Hotels, with no mention of the fact that the rooms have been adapted for multiple occupancy, all the facilities that would make it 'a hotel' have been removed and the reason they're there is that they are legally barred from doing any work while their case is heard. The enormous backlog caused by years of the Tories not processing applications has allowed a massive transfer of public money to private property owners.

If accommodation is required and rental properties are in short supply then authorities have to resort to hotels. I doubt whether they're paying anything like the rack rate for the room (the $300 quoted in the press).

I know that many people who complain about the wasteful spending just don't want accommodation to be paid for, but then again they don't want asylum seekers to be allowed to work so they can pay for their own accommodation and they definitely don't want them on the street -

Republicans must remember that they are fighting against a very evil, corrupt and, in many ways, incompetent (Policywise!) group of people, who would rather see our Country “go down in flames” than do the right thing and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! The Democrats would LOVE to see the Biggest Tax Hike in History (68%!), No Border Spending (Open Borders!), and a weak, underfunded Military, so we wouldn’t be able to do things like we did just one week ago in Iran. We gave the Dems a Debt Extension because it was the right thing to do, but they won’t do it for us. The one thing they do have is an ability to stick together, and vote as one group (They don’t have GRANDSTANDERS!). They also have House and Senate Rules that give Great Power to their Leaders - Committee Chairmanships, etc. Republicans don’t have that, have never been able to get it, BUT THEY SHOULD! What we do have is wonderful people and phenomenal Policy, and that should win Elections every single time!

DOJ announces plans to prioritize cases to revoke citizenship

The Justice Department is aggressively prioritizing efforts to strip some Americans of their U.S. citizenship.

Department leadership is directing its attorneys to prioritize denaturalization in cases involving naturalized citizens who commit certain crimes — and giving district attorneys wider discretion on when to pursue this tactic, according to a June 11 memo published online. The move is aimed at U.S. citizens who were not born in the country; according to data from 2023, close to 25 million immigrants were naturalized citizens.

At least one person has already been denaturalized in recent weeks. On June 13, a judge ordered the revocation of the citizenship of Elliott Duke, who uses they/them pronouns. Duke is an American military veteran originally from the U.K. who was convicted for distributing child sexual abuse material — something they later admitted they were doing prior to becoming a U.S. citizen.

The DOJ memo says that the federal government will pursue denaturalization cases via civil litigation — an especially concerning move, said Cassandra Robertson, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University.

In civil proceedings, any individual subject to denaturalization is not entitled to an attorney, Robertson said; there is also a lower burden of proof for the government to reach, and it is far easier and faster to reach a conclusion in these cases.

Robertson says that stripping Americans of citizenship through civil litigation violates due process and infringes on the rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

I am going to make an odd suggestion here.

If you do commit a crime that might land you in a US jail for decades, or might now get you denaturalised and deported, try for the latter insofar as possible.

You will avoid years of hell-hole existence, and chances are good you will be a free person where you get deported to. And did you want to go back to the USA? You did?? Why?

Actually, this might become a convenient way for people who are willing to emigrate permanently and don't want to look back to get a free ride out.

Because it's not about principles with them, it's about the advantages of their in-group. Which does not include all of the set "Americans", unfortunately. Even if you did favor "tribal morality" it doesn't pan out with Republicans because their idea of the tribe is much, much more exclusive than its supporters imagine it to be. Most of the supporters aren't even in it.
