Trump's Second Term

Trump trying to stop fentanyl.
His weapon against fentanyl was his empty bluster, after all. Had he been anywhere close to serious about dealing with drugs coming across the southern border, the border crossings where the overwhelming amount of said drugs pass through wouldn't have been so completely neglected, for starters.

Behind the bluster, of course, his actions made the factors that cause demand worse. That Biden managed to finally start turning things around is a credit to the hard and unsexy work Biden and the Democrats did (in the face of Republican sabotage attempts), of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was unfortunately fragile in the face of, for example...

“Even invoking the idea of military action in Mexico against traffickers is the worst idea anyone has ever had,” said Jonathan Caulkins a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University. “If that is anything other than empty rhetoric, it is plain stupid.”

Many experts believe U.S. military action against the cartels, which Trump also proposed during his first term, would do little to slow fentanyl smuggling or save American lives, but could shatter diplomatic relations and destabilize Mexico.

“It’s quite difficult to control fentanyl because it’s so easy for the illegal supply chains to produce and distribute it,” Caulkins said.

Experts say cartels or other drug gangs can easily rebuild illegal drug labs after they’re destroyed and can operate from almost any location. A recent investigation by CBC News found fentanyl production in Canada has already surged, with a growing number of “superlabs” now operating north of the U.S. border.
Like Trump's wall, there certainly is a certain superficial appeal to Trump's BS. Like the wall, though, much of what he and the Republican Party promises is just insanely stupid, at least if the actual goal was to make things better.

The Republican Party has pretty clearly shown that they're more interested in sabotaging the country for the sake of propping up destructive narratives, though, so this is sorta par for the course and not insanely stupid. Just traitorous and evil.

Bossing Mexico about migrants worked. Making deals with Mexico for fentanyl is not going to work. There are labs there that make fentanyl form two components, but they will not be found. Fentanyl is so potent that it is nothing like smuggling cocaine. The bulk fenatnyl weighs nothing. Make pills on the US side.

"Let’s make sure we keep the records straight. The story that Trump’s tariffs are designed only to make those nations stop the flow of fentanyl and migrants is NOT TRUE. It’s an excuse now offered by Trump’s ppl to rationalize a dumb policy.Trump thinks tariffs raise money. Here he is in Sept describing incoherently all the money we’ll raise from tariffs. Which he says will cover the cost of child care(!!). Please don’t advance the false narrative Trump’s ppl are offering about drugs & migrants."

Yeah, people think that no one can be that stupid, and that there must be a clever plan, a method to the madness. There isn't.

Trump says China will be paying an extra 10% on top of the new tariffs.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonald Trump

I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States But to no avail. Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before. Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Since this is a made up problem, Trump can declare in January that all the countries have done what he told them to do and he’s solved his imaginary problem. Trump delivers yet again!!!

Trump says/does something stupid. His supporters then try to find excuses as to why those stupid things aren't stupid.
It really is like Christians trying to reinterpret problematic Bible verses, isn't it. "No, no, that's a metaphor! No, Jesus obviously only meant that rule should be followed by the people He spoke to there and then! Oh, no, that law became obsolete with the New Testament!".

I was just reading about Sheinbaum schooling Trump on tariffs...my latest prediction is that in his first days in office, Trump will declare war on Mexico (yes, I know, but he is king now) and since Mexico''s president is clearly vastly more intelligent than Trump, Mexico will soundly defeat the U.S. within a week assisted by widespread International support for Mexico, particularly by Russia and China. The war will end with Trump allowing Mexico to annex California and Texas, thereby attaining revenge for the Mexican-American War 180 years ago...
You heard it here first, folks!

The one government financial organization that's all about protecting people like you and I when the banks criminally screw over people, rather than protecting the banks, and it's one of his first targets. Quelle surprise.

Hardly the first time that Republicans have targeted the CFPB, of course.

Once the tariffs make purchasing things beyond the reach of the average American, they'll stop being consumers and thus don't need protecting! Stable Genius + Galaxy Brain = Whining Combination! I mean Winning.

I wonder how many union members voted for Trump that will be upset when the NLRB is defanged and unions lose even more influence.
