Yes. No vessel should have got that close to the aircraft carrier without a challenge from the escorts and if necessary an escorting frigate should have got between the carrier and the closing vessel. Better to lose a frigate to a suicide vessel than a nuclear powered carrier.

BTW he floated nuclear talks with China in January.
I supsect he said that because some of his PR people knowing a lot of Americans are scared he is going to get invovled in a war and this, somehwo would fix that.

They were sailing in restricted waters just off Port Said. It's a busy waterway with congested shipping lanes with ships entering and leaving the Canal and the port itself. At the moment there are 49 ships in the anchorage, and more than 80 ships expected to enter and leave the port within the next 24 hours. Just a few miles along the coast is Damietta anchorage and port with another 27 ships in the anchorage and 38 expected in the next 24 hours.

Room for navigation and course changes for such big ships is limited.

What size of exclusion zone should the escorts enforce around the carrier?

During one visit in his first term, Kanye West actually sat on the Resolute Desk while The POSOTUS was right there.. I imagine any President with gumph would have demanded "Get your ----- ass off my desk!" But Kanye was going on about "this ◊◊◊◊◊◊ right here...", praising him, so the dolt was eating it up. I thought KellyAnne Conway with her heels up on the Oval Office couch was disrespectful, but that took the award.

As much as I dislike Musk, I am pretty skepticla bout this story. Way too risky andnot enough cash in it.
Now if Musk were accused of mining DOD data to give his companies an edge in competing for goverment contracts, I would buy it.
